Why the Moon Matters Much

It is hard to look at the news cycle at the current moment or at the state of the world and readily conclude that a blog post about the Moon and humanity’s future as it relates to the Moon ought to be our top priority for understanding and exploration of ourselves and our world. Yet, amidst all my other concerns I am sure that the Moon ranks very highly indeed. It is true that I do not get paid to think about these things and have many other concerns. So there is an element of arrogance in my persistence in exploring these ideas.

When I was a child the Apollo Program was a very big part of my life in the way that other great institutions are part of a child’s life. Apollo 11 was uniquely significant amongst all space related achievements of the human race up till now. Huge numbers of people could see that the human civilization was transformed in some profound way by the fact that we could perform a crewed landing on the moon and return the crew safely to Earth. It seemed to little kids of certain types and to many others that future would involve significant human development on the Moon.  I was eight years old in 1972 when Apollo 17 was completed. The years since have seen no return of human beings to the Moon. But the Moon remains a unique site with unique and totally irreplaceable potential for human kind.

I wrote a novel in which the first set of chapters or part or book is titled The Moon. But the novel has not been published. In that novel I set the action of the early chapters mostly on the moon in in crater cap colonies.

Of course we now know that there is some water on the moon, a significant amount. But not enough for the kind of lifestyle that I depict in my novel. I do believe that a well run colonial system on the moon would eventually find other deposits of water frozen into the substrata as the novel describes and this would be among the most valued mineral assets in such and economy. However that need not be true for colonies to thrive there. There is enough water to start small colonies and we could capture comets and crash them into craters on the far side of the moon in controlled landings.  There is no question that we can approach comets and land devices on them. That was proved in the Rosetta Mission.  We could select small icy comets and learn to steer them into craters on the far side while building all early colonies on the near side. Most comets are less that ten miles across in their frozen state and there are a huge number of them. They are mostly made of water. we could develop an industry to send a comet a year of less than a quarter mile in diameter crashing into the Moon’s surface for the first many years of settlement and supply enough water needs for a thriving economy there. In time we would orbit more and even smaller comets around the moon and then break them up using most of the water on the moon and some on the ships we would build in orbit around the moon. The mass added in water would be equaled by the mass launched from the moon in space ships and components for spaceships and space stations made on the moon. Thus over a century or so we have a satellite of the same mass but perhaps two to ten percent of it mass would be liquid water and atmosphere in the crater cap colonies. ships to mars and other places could be huge, fast, safe and luxurious and still be cheaper than anything we could build on earth according to proper economic and fiscal analysis.

The best discussions we can have about the future of human development on the Moon relate to understanding how it must function in our future. There are many reasons why we should develop the Moon and do so soon. I want to discuss a few of them. First, the Moon is an accessible place the lack of atmosphere and the low gravity make it easy to launch materials into space. Earth can support lunar operations relatively easily. Rescue and support ships could reach the Moon in a few days. Communication is very rapid. The economic potential for a fully developed Moon is vast and the uses for an increasingly complex civilization on Earth are myriad.

The real world impact of developing sizable colonies on the Moon could be transformative for our civilization. Mining, space based solar power plants, huge communication satellite communication capacity and a thousand other industries could yield large results on Earth in a relatively short time. All of these concepts are relatively respectable for discussion around the world even though many people in the discussion would never really consider space colonization as a serious option. There is a great deal that needs to be tended to on Earth it is true but there are those of us who believe that colonizing the Moon will help us to tend to the things that concern us on Earth.
Beyond that it’s essential to the defense of the Earth from an attack from outside. That means taking responsibility for a threat potential which is not given serious respect in moast places. We can say that vigilance sanning and resources on the moon as weel as continuous activity around the comets and asteroids would help us to guard against collisions from and comets better than keeping all our resources on Eath and we can see that the threats from such collisions are real. that is one way in which lunar colonies would be a protective and defensive asset.  But that is not the whole picture occupying the Moon effectively would also provide at least some real advantage in deling with any technological species coming to meet us with good, evil or neutral intentions. So we must consider whether alien threats are worthy on any consideration.

As far as the possibility of Alien contact goes nothing could be less important when it is not happening and very few things could be more important when they are happening. A framework for estimating the chances for communicating with another civilization is provided by the Drake Equation. This equation is used to estimate the number of communicating civilizations around during the lifetime  (or the present moment of) a program searching for their communication signals thus predicting the  success probability for the Search for Extra(T)errestrial Intelligence or SETI

N = R* • fp • ne • fl • fi • fc • L

  • N = The number of civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable.
  • R* =The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life.
  • fp = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems.
  • ne = The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life.
  • fl = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears.
  • fi = The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges.
  • fc = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.
  • L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

As far as security, national and otherwise goes. There is real risk if there is and it could be enormous. there are plenty of people who have claimed encounters with aliens, some may be highly credible. For examples see here, here and here. One question some people have long asked is whether the universe is more like a desert or a jungle. The desert theorists have been the most assertive in the most respected parts of the scientific establishment for a long time. But the recent search for exoplanets has revealed a lot of exoplanets and a good number of those in what is called the Goldilocks zone around their own stars (not too hot and not too cold for liquid water) and that has changed the assessment. Of course in most very ancient traditions and mythologies the Heavens were a jungle of sorts — full of mysterious and mystical creatures and creators. We don’t have to theorize about the existence of theoretically habitable planets anymore. Information about them can be seen here and here — and there are almost certainly a vast number more.

Various pieces of the alien threat assessment have to be considered.

I propose the Franksummers3ba Equation for the number of Alien First Contacts by direct visitation that humans will experience on earth and in the possible colonies within our own solar system. It is based on the Drake Equation.

N = ( R* • fp • ne • fl • fi • fs • fe• fb • fr • fp • fs  •L)M

  • N= The number of civilizations which might arrive at Earth and contact  or confront humans here or in surrounding future colonies relatively unannounced.
  • fs = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that develop space travel .
  • fe=The fraction of those civilizations that choose to locate planets like ours.
  •  fb=The fraction of those civilizations that build and launch interstellar craft: finding the political resources and will to do so as well as the wealth.
  •  fr= The fraction of those civilizations  which develop individual craft or groups of craft capable of reaching our solar system  from their launch point.
  •  fp= The fraction of those civilizations  which either reach a high percentage of detected planets in range or which highly prioritize reaching a planet like ours.
  • • fs= The fraction of those civilizations which use stealth or secrecy beyond our capacities of remote detection and which find it preferable to avoid electromagnetic or similar communication at a distance in advance of first contact.
  • Ll  = The length of time such civilizations launch such craft divided by the period of time humans survive in this solar system.
  • NOTE:  the brackets indicate that this is the product which gives us a number for contact from any launch site even though the next operation is also mathematically identical multiplication.
  • M=The rate at which civilizations of this sort reproduce autonomous launch sites which are in these parameter or civilizations enter these parameters which are otherwise disqualified by one or more factors through creating autonomous launch sites.

So that’s all I have time for here. But this is yet another post in favor of taking space colonization seriously. I am not sure what else I will be able to write on this subject because my Earthbound concerns are sufficient to take up my time and energy.

I am doing a space post soon but here’s a formula on little green men and such

5O Reasons why the Crater Cap Colony Concept is a Good and Important Idea

This Note will put forth 50 reasons why the Crater Cap Colony Concept is a good and important idea. The Crater Cap Colony Concept involves building a cap on the crater of other worlds such as the Moon and Mars most of all. It also involves a specific and effective from of development under the caps. In addition to all of the other things that are part of the model there is a program for mining which is specific to the model as well.
The crater cap colonies also represent both a great deal of risk and an enormous engineering challenge. This note will seek to promote the benefits of the concept and plan and to show the contrast with other schemes. However, there is no doubt that this remains a staggeringly great challenge. In addition there have been many things that were designed to fail and many efforts undertaken to preserve something that would have been threatened by a successful design, thus in order for this to succeed it would not only have to be done well by a sustained and great effort but avoid being derailed by a false effort.
One through Twenty-Five: Craters are Special
1. The progress of human technology needs to be shaped and directed not only by war and the marketplace but also by a grand and meaningful project. The development of craters on the Moon and Mars are the right places for such a focus of development. Recognizing the special and unique importance of these craters and the potential of other craters for the human race is an important part of the chance for human progress.
2. Craters are special because they occur on the Moon, Mars, the other terrestrial planets and on the major asteroids. They cannot be ignored as a great commonality of features across the solar system.
3. Craters are also special because of the efficiencies implicit and distinctive to a crater cap as the means of instituting a colonial environment. With a crater cap one can spend the great bulk of the resources and energy of the development on the completion one dimension in a shape which also provides other dimensions of enclosure which are pre=made at no additional cost. These dimensions are able to adapt in a way which the cap cannot. Mines can be operated readily on and through the floor while the cap is improved, made more substantial and kept in a state of restricted access.
4. Craters also have numerous qualities which tend to make them good places to plant a colony. The craters are visible and distinct features with well-defined autonomous edges and a large area where air can be held under a cap and the large views over the crater itself will allow for a sense of freedom space and abundance which create real and perceived priority. Other reasons in this list will return to many of these specific reasons. But this number four reason has to do with the synergy and efficiency of combining all of these factors in the whole which is the crater as a colony site. This is even more notable when compared to how bad it would be to develop the other features of these planets as early colonies.
5. Craters offer intrinsic security in a harsh extraterrestrial environment. The crater will provide a great deal of buffering and blockage as regards to the hostile of effects of solar wind, micro-meteors, cosmic radiation and allows heat management in the environment in a way which protects from the terrors and dangers of extreme heat and cold.
6. Craters provide good visible features for navigation, comparison and planning. The craters have many common features which will allow people and agencies in varied places to learn about many common challenges and benefits from a variety of colonial sites at the same time.
7. Craters provide enormous psychological benefits. If properly conceived and managed the mines will provide security if and when the cap is breached and controlled wall dugouts and sub-floor mines will house most people and activities in such a way that the craters themselves will provide an open air space reserved for agriculture, aquaculture and recreation. The principal benefit of the space will be to allow people to see large expanses and then return to the confined spaces of daily activity. Surface areas around the crater will be utilized for astronomy, solar power generation and other activities but will not be a hospitable environment which offers a sense of real freedom of movement.
8. Craters allow for ideal multiple use planning.
9. Craters allow for a really terraformed placement of colonies without extravagant expense. Craters already tend to align to the center of gravity in a certain way and to produce numerous relatively constant parameters which colony planners, environmental specialists, technology designers and engineers can rely upon to effect their colony’s optimum performance.
10. Craters allow for species variety and ecosystem balancing early in colonial development. This is because of the ability to hava a floor, a central pond or lake , air space and mines in a particular array which is conducive to the success of biological systems.
11. Craters are truly unique in that they provide a possibility for effective thermal management. In the case of the Moon, Mars, large asteroids and any large body which is not geologically active the mines will have access to unlimited relatively cold material. Proper planning will allow the energy used in mining and living as well as the heat from lighting and other systems to balance a micro climate in the crater and still have access to a broad face for emergency thermal venting.
12. Craters are remarkably stable. For the purpose of brevity I will leave this as an assertion supported by observed facts.
13. The behavior of volatiles in craters has remarkable benefits in the case of a meteor strike. In places like the Moon, Mars and other places with very little or no atmosphere the air will rush out of a breached cap into the relative vacuum outside as will some of the water while colonists shelter in the mines. This will mitigate the destructive force of a strike already broken up before entering the crater.
14. The behavior of volatiles in craters has remarkable benefits in choosing a site. The preservation of volatiles such as water in all its forms and other gasses that can be activated by heating is a property of craters which makes them suited to be colonial sites.
15. Craters allow independent mine shaft systems for greater security of all kinds and yet links them all to a central open space which can be readily observed and monitored for defects and allows for ready movement of large groups and resources.
16. Craters are readily identified for planning and travel negotiations and discussions between parties not constantly cooperating.
17. Craters come in vastly different sizes to match the resources available to very different colonial efforts.
18. Craters can be modeled and studied to a significant degree from the craters on earth.
19. Craters offer the chance to create a very complex design and environmental system that starts with a very simple plane positioned in a predictable place and in a place where it can be easily improved.
20. Transporting energy from solar panels (and windmills in the case of Mars) to the lights, pumps and heaters on the lower face of the Cap is a very efficient position for such transfer.
21. Maintenance of features on the Cap’s plane itself has many efficiencies compared to almost any other configuration.
22. The atmosphere being created in the colony will itself help to support the great plane of the Cap for the colony. This is because of atmospheric pressure below and near vacuum above and the force of gravity being lower than Earth’s gravity.
23. Craters allow us to use many old and well established Earthly technologies.
24. Craters have no exposed elevation and reduce the incidence of meteor strikes which a colony elsewhere increases as it develops.
25. Craters are efficient in that a huge amount of energy has been expended in creating most of the design features by nature itself.
Twenty-Six through Forty: Colonizing Space is Vital
26. Space Colonization is vital to being who our species is as explorers, survivors etc. Outer space is that portion of the universe that is farther from the center of the Earth than the highest reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere. It makes up more than 99.99999999999999% of the universe which we can physically perceive.
27. Space Colonization is a necessary process if humanity’s leaders are to be able to command the respect of thinking people when difficult choices and allocations of resources must be made. Some reasonable hope for a better future given that ff we were to divide up all of the physical space we can see or detect equally among all the inhabitants of the Earth the amount of space occupied by all humans alive today would make a minute and entirely insignificant portion of the share belonging to each person.
28. Space colonization in the craters is vital in that it links the vastness of space to the real abundance that come from hard work and capitalizing on opportunity So that humanity’s constituents can understand that most of virtually limitless space is dark empty and has hardly any atomic particles in it and it is so far away that physically using those particles in any way in the next 100 generations can’t be reasonably imagined yet hard work and careful choices can create real opportunities in a few nearer places.
29. Space colonization is vital because despite how tiny it is in the universe of visible light the dimensions of our solar system alone would allow us to use a fraction of more than 99.99999999999999% of the space being somewhere other than the surface of the Earth.
30. Even in our solar system which some of our traveling craft have left behind in the voyager project most of the raw natural resources are not on the Earth’s surface. The crater cap colonies which operate in low gravity wells would allow us to reach these vast resources and supply them to Earth much more cheaply than operating from Earth would.
31. By far most of the oxygen in the solar system is in outer space and ships operating from bases in 1/6 and 1/3 Earth’s gravity could better reach those resources.
32. Most of the carbon is in outer space and ships operating from bases in 1/6 and 1/3 Earth’s gravity could better reach those resources
33. Most of the hydrogen is in outer space and ships operating from bases in 1/6 and 1/3 Earth’s gravity could better reach those resources.
34. Most of the helium is in outer space and ships operating from bases in 1/6 and 1/3 Earth’s gravity could better reach those resources.
35. Most of the metals we call precious are almost certainly there and ships operating from bases in 1/6 and 1/3 Earth’s gravity could better reach those resources.
36. Most of the exotic metals and silicates we need for specialized purposes are there and ships operating from bases in 1/6 and 1/3 Earth’s gravity could better reach those resources.
37. Most of the Methane which could be burned to power a civilization for thousands of years is out there in the solar system and ships operating from bases in 1/6 and 1/3 Earth’s gravity could better reach those resources.
38. It is almost certain that there is more liquid water under the ice of Jupiter’s moon Europa than there is on Earth and ships operating from bases in 1/6 and 1/3 Earth’s gravity could better reach those resources.
39. Our space history has already proven that nothing between the Sun and the orbit of Pluto is intrinsically beyond the reach of our own basic technology to reach, tag and return from robotically. Humans operating from colonial bases in the craters would be primed to utilize these spaces.
40. Space colonization follows a chain going from observation, to exploration, to travel and exploration and then to stationing. After these things comes colonization. Space colonization has the chance to be the biggest change in human economy since the development of agriculture. The coming of agriculture was not an unmixed blessing but it was one of the most justifiable of all social changes in human history.
Forty-one through Fifty: This is the Concept
41. These Crater Cap Colonies are the key to unlocking a future of promise for humanity. Like the rise of agriculture they are the essential innovation supporting all others.
42. Some bad things by any measure will come of these colonies as they did from agriculture but it is just as essential to make the change. Had humanity not become agricultural sooner or later things would have become much worse than they have gotten so far. The Crater Cap Colonies will allow a vast new array of needed resources and very bad results are the alternative.
43. Our science and technology up to now has shown that Space can be explored. Now it must be colonized. These colonies will allow multiple models of a new human dynamism. They will allow us to address as many varied social and environmental experiments as we may choose. Life and humanity today await at a crossroads as great as that of the first rise agriculture. These colonies will have an effect as great or greater than the first great works of irrigation for large scale agriculture created the mighty powers that ruled ancient China and Egypt.
44. Like the surpluses and changes created by agriculture these colonies will create societies that could pour wealth into the extended economy and transform it at the same level that the first agricultural changes that enabled other peoples to change from nomadic hunting or nomadic herding to a combination of nomadic herding and carrying trade goods thus our non space industries would also find new opportunities.
45. In their similarity to the ancient farms these colonies will enable space industries not involved in colonization to progress just as agricultural societies enabled fisherfolk to increase their population by adding waterborne trade to their fishing economy.
46. These colonies could promote peace while at the same time creating new security and defence sector challenges and opportunities just as early agriculture enabled warrior bands to enter int0 long-term contracts with landholding kings and to earn a living partly from keeping the peace.
47. These colonies would transform our society and future just as agriculture really made a different human world and remade much of the world as well. The best hunter-gatherers were actually richer, healthier and freer than the new farmers but in the end the choice of the species as a whole to emphasize agriculture was a choice vital to both survival and any real chance of prosperity. I think that space colonization requires a similar leap and offers similar sets of consequences.
48. Space Colonization will restore a sense of wisdom and virtue not available in much of human society today. For instance, I don’t really expect to live to see a working colony on the Moon or Mars. However, as long as I do live I will apply some of my energy to that transition humanity must make towards becoming a space colonizing species.
49. Space Colonization allows for a growing human population over time and the survival of real biodiversity on Earth.
50. Space Colonization allows for a path of reasoning which is both optimistic and sane and other long term plans do not allow for this. These colonies can be cost effective and supportive of what is going on here on Earth in a very unique way.

Crater Cap Colony Concept and other Endeavors of my life

by Frank Wynerth Summers III (Notes) on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 3:35pm

I write many notes that I do not much tag and make it a habit not too tage heavily in my notes. At the time I write this I have 1,149 Facebook friends and dozens of them (you) were members of the group at the center of this topic. Feel free to converse or comment but please do not be offended for not being tagged. Most of those who are tagged were not memebers. Some are both. I just tagged a sampling of relevant Facebook friends who may or may not choose to read this trhough. I am comemorating the passing of one of the reasons I first opened this Facebook profile and keeping the ideas out there in the world one more day. This Note is really about a broader topic than the on I have selected for the title but the one I have selected for the title does matter. I am writing this note about the exploration of space and the colonization of the solar system and about my own life and efforts as well. So in context here are some thoughts:

Recalling A Facebook Group

Years ago I founded a group on Facebook called the Crater Cap Colony Concept Group. That group has now been defunct longer than it was in existence but it did involve people from all around the world and have a great number of images, formulations, discussions and diagrams related to the colonization of the Moon and Mars. It was perhaps one of the most difficult and daring undertakings of my life to bring that group into bing and was in many ways the very antithesis of the Obama presidency’s real inner meaning regardless of what else is going to come out of this period of American History. The time and energy freed up for me since the demise of this group has been time to do other things and I have done other things. In fact my whole life has been active enough.
The careful and methodical closing of the Crater Cap Colony Concept Group has been the putting aside of a dream which was busily working on for a few years in that context. Everyone has dreams and almost all of us have dreams that do not come true and which mattered to us significantly. My father dreamed of teaching at a university when I was a little child and he never did. It has always intrigued me to do so but it has never been as much a dream for me and I have already taught at a university and at a lot of other places. My dad has done some teaching as well but not as a regular instructor at a university. My father is retired and sort of emeritus head of a missionary organization of Catholics now but one of the reasons he was given for being refused a teaching assistantship at one university that gave him an interview is that at the time he was an atheist and that particular institution did not hire atheists as instructors. Years later he returned to his Roman Catholic heritage. Teaching, reading and scholarship are ready parts of my life and already parts of my life. I have been out of school for a long time but not entirely separate from these things, nor from the contacts I made in school. This past year I took the revised GRE and seriously considered going back to graduate school. I was serious about the Crater Cap Colony Concept Group but it was a kind of seriousness that was attenuated by the great difficulty in achieving these goals. I chose to shut down the group when the format changed and felt certain about that choice but it was not a simple or pleasant choice to make.

The Crater Cap Colony Concept Group also gave me connections to many people and an opportunity for many interesting discussions. However, that was not the first time I had ever been plugged into large groups of peopIe or had conversations that I cared about. I have spoken to perhaps thousands and certainly hundreds of audiences in my life and I have written a lot. I have been published a good bit as well. That history of publishing includes a good number bylines in periodicals read by those around me and in the places where I functioned then and still function now. These media include the Abbeville Meridional, The Advertiser, Bonnes Nouvelles (Vermilion) and the already much mentioned Vermilion. In the Crater Cap Colony Concept Group I had a chance to express my own opinions but I have often done that elsewhere. I have had letters to the editor appear in a variety of venues a few times over many years but those include Time and Newsweek. My only truly academic publication is a review of F.D.R.’s Moviemaker: memoirs and scripts written by Pare Lorentz and published posthumously in 1992 by the University of Nevada Press. The review appeared in the Book Reviews section of the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television in one of the issues of late 1992 or early 1993 on page 106 of that issue. I began that review with the words “Some memoirs and autobiographies of creative people require a sympathetic reading. Pare Lorenz’s memoirs do not.” My own brief autobiography in the Introductory personal statement on the old group cite may have required some sympathy to make good reading. But that is partly because there was a lot of my life to cover in a document like this and I was writing in the style one adopts when one knows that most of the essentials will not be covered I suppose.
My writing history has been in different categories, writing about Colonizing space was a special and useful outlet it has not and will not be replaced. I admit that one of my main motivations in founding the group was to seek out the institutional support for my own idea and to indulge my writerly interest in expressing that vision for the future which I still find essential. Since the closure of the group I have continued to comment on policy. I am (or at least often have been) a regular commenter on Lords of the Blog which has won the British Nominet awards as best public affairs blog. I am also a Grand Prize Winner on Lord Norton’s Quiz on that blog and have commented on his own The Norton View a great deal. I have over a thousand Facebook friends on the account where this note is first appearing. These Facebook friends are people who are very diverse and in many ways very select and elite as well. I have another account with hundreds of friends where I have an online novel which is largely set in Crater Cap colonies on the Moon that novel is the principal business of that second profile.

Thus if I am nostalgic about the old group that nostalgia must be seen in a realistic context. I still miss the group at times but it is not so easy to say why. I suppose part of it is a sense of being slighted or badly used in a number of ways and having suffered the effects of unfortunate circumstance. However, I have suffered a vast number of unfortunate circumstances and been slighted and ill used a vast number of times. Therefore that sense of injustice is not unique to the group either. I also have a sense of great opportunity lost and of wasted hope, energy and potential but that must be seen in the context of one who looks around the world and sees almost an infinite amount of lost and frustrated potential. One who finds a planet teaming with squandered opportunity and frustrated brilliance. The Crater Cap Colony Concept Group does not stand as lone mountain exceptional in a plain of even handed justice. Rather it is one copse of metaphorical trees of such frustration in a vast rainforest system of such ills.

I want to write about Space exploration, the space program and other things related to astronomy and other matters but I want to do so in a way which is responsive to the real context in which my own interest in Space and things related to astronautics has developed. For me the end of all things meaningful has been on a plane and trajectory at harmony with my life for a very long time. But still I am taking time to remember the end of this little Facebook group episode. I think that I have gotten too tired to recount all that has been lost
.
What the Crater Cap Colony Concept Was All About

This portion of the Note contains some material that has appeared on my Facebook page before now. I seek to articulate here what the CCCC Group sought to understand and bring to light in some kind of development. In origins and essence it grew from my own personal vision and beliefs as regards outer space itself. Outer space is that portion of the universe that is farther from the center of the Earth than the highest reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere. It makes up more than 99.99999999999999% of the universe which we can physically perceive. If we were to divide up all of the physical space we can see or detect equally among all the inhabitants of the Earth the amount of space occupied by all humans alive today would make a minute and entirely insignificant portion of the share belonging to each person. However, most of that space is dark empty and has hardly any atomic particles in it and it is so far away that physicaly using those particles in any way in the next 100 generations can’t be reasonably imagined. But even our solar system alone would allow us to use a fraction nearly as big as that we started this argument with or maybe bigger. In the solar sytem most of the oxygen is in outer space, most of the carbon is in outer space, most of the hydrogen is in outer space, most of the helium is in outer space, most of the metals we call precious are almost cerianly there and the metals we need for highly specialized uses abound in outer space. It is almost certain that there is more liquid water under the ice of Jupiter’s moon Europa than there is on Earth. Nothing between the Sun and the orbit of Pluto is intrinsically beyond the reach of our own basic technology to reach, tag and return from roboticaly. Cost, law, design glitches and time are clearly identifiable obstacles. I said these things were not intrinsically impossbible by rearranging and refining existing technology. Given thse basic facts, I believe that an aggressive space policy is in the interest of all humans and of the Earth and all its species so long as it is mostly a wise policy or even largely a wise policy.

What inspires me to write this note today is the small concept group which I mentioned in a previous Facebook note. I believe that the development of outer space is as important as anything else that confronts human beings in our age. The concept group was called Crater Cap Concept Colony Group. It is not the only group of people exploring the possibilities of space as a group and it is not the biggest such group either. However, it is certainly the only one that I had founded on Facebook. So that rates it an important mention in these notes.

Had humanity not become agricultural sooner or later things would have become much worse than they have gotten so far. Life today awaits at a crossroads as great as that of agriculture. The great works of irrigation for large scale agriculture created the mighty powers that ruled ancient China and Egypt and created societies that could pour weatlh into purchases that enabled other peoples to change from nomadic hunting or nomadic herding to a combination of nomadic herding and carrying trade goods. It enabled fisherfolk to increase their population by adding waterborne trade to their fishing economy. It enabled warrior bands to enter int0 long-term contracts with landholding kings and to earn a living partly from keeping the peace. Agriculture really made a different human world and remade much of the world as well. The best hunter-gatherers were actually richer, healthier and freer than the new farmers but in the end the choice of the species as a whole to emphasize agriculture was a choice vital to both survival and any real chance of prosperity. I think that space colonization requires a similar leap and offers similar sets of consequences. I don’t really expect to live to see a working colony on the Moon or Mars. However, as long as I do live I will apply some of my energy to that transition humanity must make towards becoming a space colonizing species. The Crater Cap Concept Colony is the model I thought then and still think now that we should be pushing towards making a reality. While astronomy has always been a discipline that was a significant teacher and leader into fields of knowledge for much of the human race’s journey into development — it must yield to the leadership of those who will build permanent and sustainable colonies. On the day when Humans have a few colonies on the moon with tens of thousands of residents each it will be very easy to make huge progress in astronomy. However, aiming only for a golden age of astronomy will not necessarily bring about lunar colonization. The larger possibility must find the rank and leadership in these areas.

Craters are distinct features which can be studied and which have common characteristics. They exist on the Earth, the Moon, Mars, asteroids, several moons of our solar systems planet and can be theorized to exist in or near many other objects around our sun or other stars. Capping a crater has an intrinsic economic and resource wisdom to it because one is using the enormous energy already expended in creating the bowl and only creating one side. Frequently one could achieve enormous benefeits in blicking our cosmic rays and radiation. All of these benefits are true even for asteroids. However, in larger round objects like the Moon and Mars it is very likely that one could use the gravity to create a highly functioning biospheric hemisphere. In terms familiar to some, one could make a terrarium including one or more aquaria. Whether or not there is air or liquid water on the heavenly body would have little to do with the success of the crater cap colony. People could live in these and that is the basis of our little concept group. that ended so long ago. It was confrimed in its hypothesis by many of the findings of lunar and Martian missions which have occurred since that time. I am including some drawings of various parts of the process at the end of this note without explanation.

I also think that once there is a crater colony (or certainly a few crater colonies) thriving on the moon then one would have a basis for many industries. Things manufactured on the moon would be easily lifted and deployed to Mars colonization, to space ships, to Earth orbiting stations and to asteroid miners. One sixth gravity is economic magic that would make all solar system operations entirely different. Producing goods in space and dropping them to earth is intrinsically cheap. Thus carbon fuels highly refined could be lifted to the moon where they will be mixed with gasses made impure for colonies by various accidents and industries. These fuels would lift six times as much from the Moon as they would from the Earth and these fuels would not affect Earth’s air and climate when burned. Very precious things would be “downported” by Earth to maintain a balance. In the distant future components of landing craft returning to Earth would be built with precious metals needed by agencies and nations on Earth. This would create a flow of commerce to bring our population base into outer space. Within a few centuries perhaps a significant minority of cities and farms could be in outer space without any flash bang science that includes things we cannot imagine.

Once we have a couple of crater colonies on the Moon we would need geosynchronous satellite and another base perhaps at an L point between lunar and Terran gravity. These would be the places where all aging nuclear weapons were disposed of by either being loaded on spacecraft for second or third explosions or used in initial explosions to launch really massive spacecraft to move very fast on the way to other colonies and smaller robots on their way to the stars.

None of this is pure fantasy. I think we should divide up most of the surface of the Moon and Mars among all of earth’s nations unequally, sell some as new national sites and keep a good portion as a permanent UN mandate. Failing to act wisely now either means we willl lose humanity’s greatest economic opportunity or else end up with a really horrible policy made under more pressing conditions. I am not optimistic that we will make good choices. But I think our behavior in this century will determine the human future’s outlook for all of foreseeable human society.

I am committed to specific goals but I support all who are sincerely striving for a human future in space that is wise and sustainable. Good luck and God Bless to all of you out there. I am not a likely expert or member of the space community but I cherish this hope for an expanding future. Perhaps the humanist and amateurish perspective will cost me a few Facebook friends. I lost some over the years of all types and besides professionals in space matters who mattered to me even lately. However, I am grateful for the professionals on my list at the time of this writing

Third Chapter of my online novel: includes human flight…

Chapter Three “Life Beneath the Caps” in Part Two “The Moon” of a Science Fiction Novel in Progress

by Summers Progress on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 2:45pm
Your changes have been saved.

After saying goodbye to Roberta, Joseph opened his luggage case and then dropped the folding empty outer rental case into a chute in his closet. He opened his leather valise and put on some of his favorite comfortable and casual clothes. He ran a quick comb and brush through the hair he wore longer than ususal these days. He noticed the small but fresh burn mark just below his right ear. It joined more scars than he could count of various ages across his body.

Then he walked across the thick luxurious carpet of the suite to his computer workstation. To maximize the effectiveness of everything he would do he inserted the e-tab he had just won into the tablet port on the console. He linked to the Contest Committee and dowloaded all of the orientation package. He first took a virtual tour of the vast Neil Armstrong Super Cruiser. Then he took a virtual tour of Museum Port in the New Array where it was to be mothballed. He finished the coffee in his inroom coffee machine while he was making the virtual trip from the Moon to Mars a 10,000 times actual speed. He was hungry and his neck hurt him. Roberta had left at about 2:45 local time and it was now 7:30. He had hardly moved. He used his personal credit card to send Roberta flowers at work that night and sent all his link information to the Armstrong Agency. He then connected his console to the Dreamlearner set on his bed. He would leave it all set up to download some Dreamlearner programming from Armstrong while he went out.

A few minutes later he was in a hovercab setting out under the artificial stars of an artificial night. “Where to Sir?”

“The Church of the Holy Magi.”

“Rimville it is.”

The trip was uneventful, he did notice tiny lights moving between the heavy lanes of traffic in the mass of air. “Those little lights that fly all over but stay out of the main airlanes and are not the cablecars traveling the wires from the plug — are they the birders I saw during the day?”

“Sure are. Anyone can go birding during the day but you have to have a special license to go at night.”

“I hope to do that while I am here in Lunapolis. Go Birding I mean. I am a pilot but I may not get around to night flying.”

“Don’t miss birding man. I go once a week if I can. I bring the wife and kids at least once a month.”

“Pretty exciting I guess?”

“It is not just exciting. It is the fact that you own body is powering itself and maneuvering itself like a bird. It changes you somehow.”

“I will definitely have to try that.”

“Listen to get a cab out of Rimville you can take the hub bus to the great balcony or you can just text my license number to Lunapolis Taxi and I will pick you up at the church. As long as you are ready by 2:00 that is when I get off.”

“I should be ready well before that. I thought I would go to the Church and see it, maybe catch the late service and then I would get some food somewhere and visit the Military Grottoes. How long should that take?”

“I think I will hope to hear from you between 10:30 and midnight.”

“That sounds good then.”

The hovercab dove through the breach doorway on the great balcony at almost full speed and then slowed. It landed on one of the many streets that ranbetween the massive foundations, anchors and machines which were part of the infrastructure for maintaining the colony’s crater cap. There were lot of streets in Rimville lined with trees and big houses with lawns were set in the blocks that made up most of the spaces between the huge iron pilings, copper tubes and lead blocks. The hovercab had drawn all its wings in as close to the body of the car as they could be drawn and it was now moving along the streets on its six land wheels. A motor powered the wheels but the jets still provided rapid acceleration when needed. This jet boost blew up lots of loose leaves that had gotten near the streets. There was fairly heavy traffic. Joseph swiped his credit card and got out in front of the church. Stylized almost geometric statues of three wise men looking at a star of lucite and gold above the door stood in a small rock garden and near a pond. Parishoners had to navigate through this little tableau to get to the entry steps.

Joseph go to the steps and stopped at the top to read a sign. The sign was brass and the letters raised. It was lit by two arclights.

The sign read:

The Church of the Holy Magi is the oldest full time and free-standing house of worship on the Moon. The long secret rite of Magitic Levantine Christians was recognized as an official Eastern Rite of the Roman Catholic Church in 2087. This was the third church dedicated under the first public Archmandrake sometimes called Paphnutius XXX and sometimes Paphnutius I. The other two Churches were on Earth. All three were paid for in large part by a donation from Chief Basil Zargos-Culkathadreil. Masses are offered for his soul and family twice every Saturday at this altar.”

Joseph did catch a late mass. He sat in the back and did not go to communion. But after services he met the priest and introduced himself. He gave the priest a personal calling card with his hotel address scribbled on the back. He asked about his cousin Daniel.

“Yes, he comes to church here sometimes — even often. But he is not here most weeks. I think he is working for one of the astronomy companies as a maintenance tech so he spend a lot of time on the surface.”

“Well, if you see him please give him my number and if you hear anything call me.”

“I certainly will. But you have been on television a great deal today. I am sure word will reach him soon enough.”

“Well, I am only in Lunapolis for two weeks.”

“Right, I will do what I can.”

Joseph took out his e-tab and activated the camera function. He had decided to take some video of the Church as he had of the fountain and  some other views. He wanted to put together a documentary for friends and family of his first trip to the Moon and a possible keepsake album on video for himself and his possible new girlfriend. He shot the ceiling which in a Levantine and Magitic Church showed the traditional contellations of several cultures surrounding the divine eye in a Star of David which had one traingle made of fire interlocking with another made of ice. Then he shot the San Damiano style painted Crucifix and the altar of arrivals and the altar of departures as well as the High Altar but he did not take long over doing those things.  Some things were typical of all churches of his write like the huge illustrated gold covered bibleand others were unique to this church. Then he came across something really unique. It was a plaque of tribute:

  • We want to pay tribute to the several chaplains who served in meeting halls and dorms and open floor areas of various kinds before Lunapolis was founded. There names appear in the frame of this plaque. As the first regular house of worship on the Moon we recognize them. However, we more emphatically want to recognizr Dr. Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin who celebrated the Eucharisitc rites of his Protestant Christian Communion on the very first trip of humanity to the Moon’s surface. Although we have theological differences which are important his effort to honor the memory of Jesus Christ in that way is precious and sacred to us.

Joseph had forgotten that there was a Eucharistic service on the Apollo voyage made byArmstrong, Aldrin and Collins. Remebering that made him feel uncertain about having missed the chance to receive communion. But he was now in a hurry so he turned offf the camera function in his e-tab and hurried out of the church.

Joseph grabbed a shrimp salad and and a beer at a small cafe and the rented a glidecycle and saw the grottoes. In the Hall of Honor he used their Moon Map Simulator. He saw the Amalgamated Region of  US Zones with Lunapolis as its capital and the several United Nations zones including the one  that took in most of Mare Insularum and included the very uncapped Crater Copernicus with its  many tunnel gates and towers and miles of solar collectors connected to it by armored conduits for this was  where  The Grand Central Spaceport was situated. He saw the zones assigned to each country on Earth and the corporate and royal microstates, some were pople he knew vaguely Prince Thurn und Taxis was a real Head of State here with a royal charter colony with a colony named simply Thurn und Taxis that was built in Gruithuisen Crater on the edge of Mare Imbrium near the  end of the broken lands where the Promontorium Heraclides marked the end of the Montes Jura.  He and the Prince had gotten drunk together once at a mutual friends bachelor party. Because his wristband was unreliable here he used a wall phone to send a message to Lunapolis Taxi and then took his glidecycle back toward the church to turn in for his deposit near the cafe. Just as he finished his cab arrived and in short order brought him back to the Valley View Hotel. One of the most interesting aspects of the Moon Map Simulator is that it showed video of the three crater cap outposts which came before the first crater that was classed as a colony. The first was fifty yards in diameter, the second a hundred yards and the third was three hundred yards. It was in these outposts that the basic skills of crater capping had been developed and made the development of the Moon as a whole.

It was about one when he got to his room. The Dreamliner was fully prepped. After he went to the bathroom to ready himself for the night he lay in bed and put on the mask, the socks and the half gloves. Then he peeled a fresh chestpad and stuck it to his chest. He fell quickly into a deep sleep.

Then he began his training to pilot the Armstrong while he slept.

Joseph woke at nine. He removed his Dreamlearner equipment and took a bath, soaking the strane lunar bubbles and waves of the familiar whirlpool. He got out of the tub and put on his athletic gear. He folded out the room’s exercycle near the computer station. Then he put on the televisor and picked up his e-tablet. He booked the first available birding lessons and flight sessions. He had a coupon for just this much birding that came with this suite. He scheduled the lessons while Roberta was working but the birding itself he shduked just in time for her to get there. He had just deposited his most recent severance payment from the Catapult company in the morning’s transactions. He used most of this money just for Roberta’s flight and suit rental. Then he firmed up dinner reservations at the hotel. He did all this while watching television quarter screen. There were several versions of his interview with Roberta on the air. He got her acceptance for the birding by text and a thanks for the flowers. Happily he redeemed his coupon for a walking tour leaving the Hotel and taking Insane Lane to the Birding Aerie and back. He simply would remain there and not come back with the tour. He and Roberta would come back in her car.

Joseph rushed down to the lobby and barely got to his tour group in time. Almost all were Americans in this group anyway. The couple next to him were from that part of Wyoming where some of his relatives had a ranch and he recognized the intonations and accents of the region right away. Two apparent brothers had on Red Sox hoodies he would have found warm and so he wondered how the Yankees could be enjoying them. A tall light-skinned black man with what he thought was the pronunciation patterning and manner of one of Louisiana’s Creoles of Color was asking the clearly Afro-Lunarian guide how long Insane Lane had been called by that name. The guide picked up a set of magnetic shoe meshes and answered the question.

” The settlers who built the Lane called it Insane Lane. The path is magnetized now and everyone on this tour must wear magnetized shoe meshes. there are also magnets catch points below the path. In addition birders at the aerie run a rescue service and will swoop down to rescue those falling from the path. Further every walker will be tied to two other walkers and a flybot except for the guides. On the way back some of you will stay to do some birding and if necessary guides will tie up to make up threesomes for the return trip. Now does everyone have the meshes Bob has been handing out?”

The guide was looking over his group and checking the faces of other guides. He nodded finally. ” We will be taking this shuttle bus outside to the Pond Piers over the falls. We will have a good look at the wall nests of a very large colony of parrots which have adapted to our cooler climate along with everything else they have to adapt to here. We have five days of freeze per year in Lunapolis and when we do the falls are heated to allow animals and birds who need warmth to avoid the cold. That is what these parrots do along with many others. They come near the falls. But right now they are just enjoying their normal roost.”

In the shuttle a very attractive redhaired Earth woman and her bronzed Earth husband sat in the two seats beside him. The woman had several rings on her fingers. She turned one in front of him so that he could see the small Culkathadreil Coat of arms etched on it. He felt unexpected speed as the shuttle left the hotel. He showed the woman the cooat of arms etched small on his wristwatch. She signed to him with her fingers in a code he knew well.

“Fire is Known.”

“I promised secrecy.” He signed back.

The woman gave the general sign of respect for a memeber of the House or Clan Culkathadreil who had a very much higher rank than oneself. The same sign could sometimes translate “Your Grace”,Your Highness” or any of a number of other honorifics. However, Joseph noted that it all very properly done. ” We know you had to kill the arsonists. One was an Assasin also.”

“I had to resign.”

“Armstong Agency has secrets. Check your route and be careful. We will leave special supplies in your room tonight.”

“What do you want?”

“Only to warn you. Armstrong Agency are not the pirates but they also study them and do not tell us anything. Those loyal to your family are also on the ship to Mars.”

The old signs were slow and laborious and he did have to see the parrots for cover. They were quite beautiful too. The trip was over and they were getting out once this information had been exchanged. When they got off the bus he and the woman were careful to take no interest in one another and to end up in separate threes. He thought he might have seen her however, perhaps at his Father the Grand Duke and Vice-Chieftain’s funeral. That would have been almost eleven years ago and her breasts had been a different apparent size, she had been single and her eyes had been one blue and one green not the two nearly violet globes he saw now but  he knew she was the one who played the violin for the funeral mass and then come to his mother’s reception — they had talked. He had not seen her before and now would not, in all likelihood, see her again.

The path or lane was really terrifying for many. It was a foot wide and overlooked a drop of hundreds of meters in many places. But the views were spectacular and the whole tour made it to the birding aerie with no major incidents. Once there they could see that most had come by hovercar.

Saying goodbye to his tour Joseph went to the building with a large sign that read “Training”. He was greeted by enought different people to get confused and was fitted with a birding suit and then had most of it removed again. He and half a dozen other classmates had to identify the parts by repeating after the instructor. “Forewings” “forewings!”

The forewings had an unusual slope or camber that set up a rise in an odd shape to the front and then across the middle that allowed for varied angles of attack that still produced lift but were all the harder to predict for their unusual shape. They also had two lines of memory ports that acted as the feather assembly on a bird’s wing acts. When the wings pushed air down and back the ports locked and the wings created thrust as well as lift. But on the return strokes when the wings pulled forward the memory ports opened and the wings offered little resistance to the air but their unusual shape allowed them to catch a little redirected lift even on those strokes.

“Midwings…” “midwings!” He yelled out with the rest and noticed that these midwings were really hollow shaped airfoils of the type he knews best – “the smeared pyramid line” a buddy called it. There was none of the complexity of memory ports on these wings. They did not beat and only cut through the air like a hang glider. They had a much smaller area than an Earthly hang glider would need however to do this job.

“Aftwings…” “aftwings!” The aftwings were bifurcated air foils and with two they were quadrufurcated airfoils. The complexity was getting mind boggling. These had the battery chargers and a system of webbing that gathered every random pressure and tension into ennergy to power a helmet jet and instruments and they had a kind of automatic compensating beating device. They beat four times fro each stroke delivered by humn muscle to their master joint. They were almost entirely covered wtih memory ports that allowed them to push back and down and cut easily on the return.  He could not really picture the whole function but he could see that they worked. He called out with the rest.

“Power tails” “Power tails” This assemblage connected to a kind of inflated body cast. A small  standard air foil was held out beyond the main tail and had air driven across it. Another traditional airfoil wing was above it near the top and had small rudder like blades on it. However the tails themselves were covered with memory ports. pushing air back and down in a single wall they opened like a sieve on the return stroke. He repeated the name of the component with the other students.

At this point Roberta showed up to meet him. They touched hands and smiled and she joined in a sort of simultaneous refresher course where she was partly with him while he went through the first-timer’s course. She had  been birding about twelve times and this helped to even out their skill sense he was a highly trained pilot and a really gifted athlete. The suits without wings were hooked up to wires, hooks, cables and sensors. The students were hoisted into the air in in a large room surrounded with screens and holoshow projectors. Even Joseph had one simulated crash. the other newcomers had more than a couple. The three refreshers had what might be called severe wobbles as they got reaquainted with the suits but did not crash. Roberta’s wobble was the least severe of the three who had birded before and she really looked at ease after that initial reminder. But all those in the class grasped the basics and  within a half hour they were flying. Then the wings were put on and they were suspended from a leader cable-arm and a tether by arms running on a rail. Soon they all displayed some grace and control. The arms ran five times around an oval track and the lessons were finished. He walked out wearing his suit with diassembled wings just in time to see that Roberta’s refresher course had actually eneded much sooner and she was waiting for him having got them each an energy soda. He  gave her a kiss on the cheek.

They were both helped into the real rental suits  for flying out in the world (which had alalrm beacons, medikits and automatic traffic lights on the soles of the feet, the gloves and the tops of the shoulders. They had these suits quickly tested and then both had their wings properly installed and they took to the air. A rigid helium filled baloon ran as a tube from mid back between the waists and shoulder blades to a spot rigidly supported almost a meter behind and exactly two old fashioned American feet above the birder’s feet. There was a sort of tentlike structure of three large almost soft and yet rigid cloth panels covered with memory ports that went over this tube and connected with both feet there was a fine webbing that readjusted automatically to get the best angle of attack. One or the other side panel could beat alone or elese the whol three fold desin could beat like a wing as the microcomputer responded to pressure readings on the fabric and the machanical design responded to the birder. This was the powertail.

Another wing called the aftwing ran from the rib cage all along the outside of the legs and then portruded another  two meters out and a few inches behind each foot. here a boot had gyroscopes and beater arms to synchronize three follow up beats for every muscled beat. The memory ports guaranteed thrust and brute lift while the angled shape added to the general lift like a second wing on a biplane. These were the aftwings.

Overlapping these about inch in back or above started the very flexible midwings which ended up secured to the outside of each wrist. It would seem that the arms would be used for flapping but the legs were more powerful and the wrists in their odd “loops of control” assemblies could bend the mid wings for all kinds of direction. The midwings had pull-out airfoils sections near each wrist which somehow merged back into the main perfectly every time but could allow cool effects and more hand freedom when needed. No memory ports confused this graceful Earthly design.

The last set of wings were the forewings with complex bumping arifoil shapes and limited memory ports in the  portion pointing out sharply from the back and a  few more clustered in the large graceful front section that went out like the tops of large angel wings above and behind the head. The fronts of the forewings were joined to eachother and both the birders hands with a very flexible and springy square of rods. Then each birder had a helmet with rudder and a small built-in jet. Working together the suits were amazingly varied and flexible in their capacities.

Rough sketch of a lunar colony birdsuit as envisaged in the 21st century

They flew near enough to caves for him to see the many kinds of wall homes. They flew above and below and around hovercar lanes. By flattening out after a dive at just abouperfect performance and after starting right against the sky plates they could match speeds with the lower portions of a cable car run and look passengers in the eye for several seconds. They played among flocks of birds and flew in among bats leaving caves for the evening. They work their way to the rail tower and back. Then they got out of their suits and into Roberta’s car and drove like lunatics to get to their dinner reservation. They ate quickly and made love in the shower. Then Joseph asked if she could forgive him wearing the Dreamlearner while they slept. She agreed to forgive him and they slept together just touching on their sides and with their toes.

As he drifted to sleep he dreamed of the fire. He heard his boss’s voice saying (as he had in real life) “You killed four kids Joseph!” He saw one of the four burning his friend Ed alive with a flamethrower as he Joseph could do nothing to help him but was running through rails and beams finally shooting the flamethrower and roasting the killer quickly alive and to death. Then the Dreamlearner took over and he was in the Armstrong performing simple tasks.

When he awoke early in the morning Roberta was already dressed. He ate with her wearing a robe and asked if should meet him for a quick supper the next day. She agreed. “Thanks for everything.” she said. They kissed and he watched her go. Then he went back into the room to change clothes.

Once he had changed his message light was on and so he called the front desk. He asked what the message was. “There is a crater cap engineers and designers convention in the hotel. The Summers Foundation has left an invitation for you to join them at their reception tonight alome or with a guest. No need to RSVP you simply pick up the invitation on your way across the lobby between seven and ten.”

“That is unusual but I am pleased. I have admired the Summers Foundation for years, my family knew the old ones you know.”

 “I see sir, very well.”

“Listen, I will have to get back and forth to the Armstrong Agency everyday for a while and don’t want to rent a hovercar can you suggest anything?”

“Yes take the Fall Behind Elevators from the hotel gardens to the Floor their is a train station there and take the Floor train to Twin Towers Hill which is really the east side of the base of the Central Plug. Change trains at SunTzu Plaza and get off at Mouton’s Markets. The very large red dome towering over everything else is the Armstrong Agency’s main building.”

“Part of the floor’s 30 percent they must have stroke here…”

“They certainly do.”

While he was a the desk workstation in his suite he checked into the Summers Foundation online and downloaded his convention invitation to his own e-tab though he would not be likely to need it here in the Hotel. His e-tab cross-reference feature let him know that his neighbor on the shuttle would be there — Shan Da-Jiang was his name he was reminded. He also checked to see what the Foundation would be doing at the convention. He saw that a long with a few other things they would be sponsoring a historical holocube. He looked at one of the documents in the display as it was reproduced at the workstation it was called First Public Proposal. This was dated 2009:

  • Frank Wynerth Summers III 1. Craters are extremely abundant on the far side of the moon and quite abundant on all of the moon, on Mars, on many reachable and theoretical objects in the solar system and elsewhere.2. Craters are avaliable on earth for habitat testing.3. To a large degree craters are able to hold vast pressure differentials because the planet itself is the wall and it cannot really collapse.4. Science can be done and planetology studied both from and in the crater colonies.5. Objectively building a single plane and gaining the value of vast excavations requiring megatons of tnt worth of energy is a much better investment.6. Water and resources will tend to stay in the crater.7.Air and water vapor will tend to seek escape through the cap in which all space technologies are concentrated.8. On Mars certainly and the moon possibly many chemiclas needed to manufacture the atmosphere could be found in the crater.9.An asset of almost limitless value is being created rather than maintaininga very costly resource that is always very marginal almost every way.10. One can project straight lines to having hundreds of farms and 100s of thousands of persons in mining, space industries and service industries permanently living on Mars and on the Moon

He decided that he would try to make it to the convention. He wanted to learn as much as he could about this technology — it seemed more urgent to him than he could have explained.

Elsewhere in the Lunapolis Crater Cap Colony there was a  building embedded in a cavern in a Communications Mall. Several of the top United Nations officials in the colony of Lunapolis were in the Casual Conversation Cube Cafe simulating a conversation with officials on the major UN orbital forts, the UN centers in New York and Geneva, the UN offices in the Grand Central Spaceport here on the Moon and a base on Mars. This was where these two officials attended the monthly meetings of a special committee called the Panel on Space Crises. The Casual Cnversation Cube provided real communication and also created an illusion of real time conversation, kept minutes, attached relevant documents to the transcript and sent out called for messages during the conversation. One of the UN officials was the UN Registrar of  Intermember Trade and had a good sized office on the colony floor. The other was a man who did not really seem to live in Lunapolis but showed up for these monthly meetings here whenever he was not piloting a longterm route on a ship. Over the past seven years he had made about half the mmetings at this spot and another quarter from the ships he piloted. The last quarter he simply missed without providing any explanation or excuse. Nobody seemed to know exactly where Thor Swensen truly lived. He was the Special Lunar Commissioner for Nonmember Issues and Relations. Nobody on this panel could find any other Special Commissioners for Nonmember Issues and Relations. Everyone else on the panel knew one another’s salaries but Thor received only annual bonus pay and an expense account. He did not look like he could really work for the UN. They knew he had a different style of speech here than anywhere else but this was more than Intelligence Officer cover. He seemed to really live multiple mysterious lives. He was speaking now.

“We have to take the possibility that this is an event of great significance very seriously. If we do not respond well then it need not be the cataclysm the late Doctor Taylor’s report suggests to greatly impact the United Nations. Contact with aliens must be handled and handled very well by the UN or we will lose almost all real claim to legitimacy in the Space side of things. All of our members are very influenced by their Space establishment. I have proposed we doulble the original investment in the placement of technical equipment and experts on the Neil Armstrong”.

“Your request has been approved Commissioner Swensen”. The answer came from Subsecretary for Space Hillman Barclay in New York.

“Thank you. I do want to go on the record that my request was minimal and state that I am in favor of risking any expansion of resources the Panel may approve without my vote”.

“It is so noted. That is unlikely, however I have used your report to reschedule some military assets into a support role”.

 “Good”.

After the meeting Thor called an old friend who was in his third home in the French Colony of Petit Bourdeaux. Jean Claude Landry answered the phone. “JC this is Thor”.

“How are you pal”?

“I am OK. Listen, there is a big event coming down the pipe involving the Armstong, UN and some mysterious science. I will not be able to talk to you about it again. I think you are likely to get a job offer somehow related to this. I urge you to take it we need the best on this team”.

“I hear you pal. It is on my tickler now. I will do what I can”.

Then Thor called into the Pilots Guild and “accidentally” dumped a partial scrambled file from  his recent reconaissance flight with a wormhole detector into a public chat center in the guild. He did not know who would look into this but he figured somebody would do this”.

He then looked at the itinerary for the Neil Armstrong and saw that one of the prize winners was a solid pilot with a security background named Joseph Culkathadreil. He was able to decide that this guy would be a good cabinmate for the trip. He was known enough on the records not to be a spook or pirate and yet not part of the UN network people he was trying to avoid being absorbed by. He also had ties to many institutions of significance which were not seated meber nations. He left he building and began to change his voice, gait and mannerisms. Soon the events inside seemed a foggy and distant memory.

Under a peculiarity of Lunapolis law any portion of one’s name had most of the uses of of the legal and correct name. This was used by all sorts of people indifferent ways although a serious searxh of the record lines of someone not lying about their names would lead tothe full name and identification eventually. But Thor Patrick Swensen-O’Brien had a long standing identity as Patrick O’Brien who was a regular customer and ten percent owner of the corporation that owned The Boston Commons Bar. This was far more than a bar,  it had five great rooms: an Irish Pub, an American New England lobster house witrh a  bandstand, a large dance hall, a typical Lunarian Mining Engineers nightclub with pool tables and darts and scantily clad waitresses and a select market for premium garden produce.  It was one of two of the most important social gathering, eating and drinkinking places in the colony. The other was the fiefdom of the Grazzini family which was a huge first class restaurant called  The Roman Empire. Patrick O’Brien had a whole host of business dealings with Tomasino Grazzini who was one of the pricelings of the tribe of restauranteurs. Thor put in colored contact lenses sprayed on instant heir color for these meetings in person and only met him a few times each year even on a busy year.

He stood in the farmers market and accepted a purchase order for mushrooms, celery, endive, onions, and olives which met certain standards and which the Grazzini’s could not be sure of getting enough of from their own direct farmers.  This done they transacted some legal marijuana cigarette import business because together they held a near monopoly an the legal wholesaling of this product. Then O’Brien asked  the question he had been formulating. “Do you remember when we had the last names disclosed of the big bosses who won the legal marijuan production plant that supplies us and we found one big guy. Everyone in our business calls him Seigneur Daniel but do you remember his last name — I might have to look it up”

“Well, it is hell to pronounce when you read it but yes I do remember his name. It is Daniel Culkathadreil”.

“Thank you, I really appreciate that.  I thought that was it”.

The Direct Imperial Government in the New American Regime: Part Two

In the first post of this series within a series I delineated the role of the royal waste and ruins right  included in the traditional lore of rights pertaining to established Acadian-Arcadian royalty and its expression in the Imperial Waste Authority  of the new Direct Imperial Government.  In this post I want to discuss the next service selected for our little series of posts on this topic.  In the first post I set out what I intended to cover: ” The four Agencies discussed here will be The Imperial Waste Authority, The Human Habitat Expansion Agency (Distinct from the Human Habitat Expansion Office of the Imperial House),  The Imperial Wellness Agency and the Government Liaison Agency for the Imperial House, Household and Services. In discussing these agencies I will discuss the DIG as a whole.” Some very key agencies mentioned  in previous series of posts would be part of the DIG and are not included here. These agencies include the Securities Assurance Administration regulating and providing a minimal insurance package for stock markets, Imperial Transport Authority not mentioned directly bit alluded to briefly in several places and the Direct Imperial Governments constituent zones, districts and fiefdoms  as well as their means for interacting with the whole DIG. What can be done in this little series is to define a few aspects of this government. Let this post delineate the Agency of the Direct Imperial Government which will most exemplify the uniqueness and aspirations of this proposed regime. If this regime were to become what might honestly and widely be called a great success in both its own time and in the view of history then it must be in substantial part because the Human Habitat Expansion Agency has succeeded to a significant degree. However, no challenge undertaken by this newly proposed regime will be as difficult to satisfy as the successful operation of this agency and the furtherance of its aims.

 The Human Habitat Expansion Agency

  A. Constitutional and Legal Founding of the HHEA

1. The Constitutional Provision

The Human Habitat Expansion Agency would most certainly challenge much of the established order of the world by its mere existence. That is true of many aspects of this regime’s proposed operations and undertakings however none more than this. Yet with an irony that occurs fairly frequently in the course of human history this agency and the undertakings that will  be led and facilitated by this agency and the relevant counterparts it will have offer the best chance of long-term development in a peaceful and productive future in the world. The new Constitution shall provide in the Article on the Direct Imperial Government in the Subsection on Human Habitat Expansion that:

“Principal and most serious of all the obligations undertaken by this regime which were not undertaken by the previous constitutional order of the old republic shall be the pursuit of a realistic and careful plan which is nonetheless bold and innovative for human habitat expansion. This shall be among the Offices and Ministries of the Emperor and his Imperial House. The Direct Imperial Government however, shall play a very important role in its own right by coordinating and integrating the operations of the Imperial House, the United States Government, the governments of the Constitutional Jurisdictions and the activities of private persons and private enterprise in this endeavor of  human habitat expansion. The Direct Imperial Government shall discharge these duties primarily under the auspices of the Human Habitat Expansion Agency.”

2. The Statutory Creation and Structure of the HHEA

In the Direct Imperial Government Civil Code Title Direct Imperial Government there will be a major Section called Agencies and in that Section a Subsection called Human Habitat Expansion Agency. This Subsection will not be fully outlined much less written here but I will specify in paragraph form what it shall basically provide. The law will provide that this is an agency of the highest rank and order in the DIG. It will provide that it consists of an External Minister of Human Habitat appointed by the Emperor from five nominees submitted by the DIG Legislature for a period of twelve years renewable for seven more years  and removable by the Emperor at the end of one or at the end of  five years and by the DIG Legislature at the end of three years and by the GRIHHA at the end of eight years. Under this shall be seventeen position filled by the External Minister at his or her whim and four positions nominated by him or her that must be confirmed by the US Senate. Those positions shall be Surveyor General, Waste Authority Liaison, Chief Biologist and Bricoleur General. Each of these shall be entitled to appoint five of their immediate subordinates in rank and ten staff to their direct offices. All other positions shall be filled by the Imperial Civil Service, The Emperor’s Maintenance Corps, the Direct Imperial Government Police  or the other proper agencies or contractors. However, Civil Service and Maintenance Corps personnel may be classed as permanent employees of the  Human Habitat Expansion Agency.

The Surveyor General will locate and assess areas for human colonization on desert pelagic shelfs in the seas near the Empire and in its waters, in seamounts, and on craters on the Moon and on Mars. Once a Human Habitat Expansion Treaty is effected the Surveyor General will work with other powers to effect mutual benefit and avoid confrontation wherever possible. This Division will also set up the basic markings and plans of a site selected for colonization.

The Waste Authority Liaison and the Division subordinate to this official will prepare projections of materials and resources needed for all aspects of a colony and work with the planning, preparation and prepositioning as well as final transport of all resources which can be had from the lower end of distressed and devalued assets of the IWA for which the IWA will be paid mostly in rights in the new colony and by not having to dispose of that true waste in other sites. This Liaison will also keep a record of what is placed where and arrange for a program of monitoring health risks, emissions, and leaching as well as supporting IWA services to the established colony.

The Chief Biologist will be in charge of setting up all Crown Colonies as places with sustaining agriculture, recreational stressed species nature reserves and fisheries as significant parts of the overall plan. In colonies licensed and not operated by the Crown the Chief Biologists Division will be  responsible to see that the sustainable biotic component and environmental impact standards specified in the Direct Imperial Government Civil Code are fully met.

The Bricoleur General shall be in charge of interacting with the Colonial Architect in charge and the Master Architect who shall serve at the pleasure of the External Minister of Human Habitat Expansion. He shall be in charge  of special labor and planning units who can optimize substandard and distressed resources used for these massive projects and who especially can take irregular object that make up the vast majority of an artificial island and join it to the basic premium structures built directly by the Colonial Architect. He shall also have a vast library of modeling software over time which allows the best use of varied objects for building massive artificial islands.

The statutes will also provide some detail of the basic concepts of artificial islands and crater cap colonies. These things have been discussed at length elsewhere in this set of blog posts and in related sites and will not be discussed here at length. That will be a substantial portion of the Statute.

The highest Imperial Civil Service Position will be the Licenser General who will license the colonization projects of private parties and of governments and provide for their interaction with this agency. The Imperial Civil Service  will be a separate title in The Direct Imperial Government Civil Code. Civil Service positions will offer  access to the comforts and securities of a middle class American Dream to people from throughout the Empire. That will probably be more valuable as less is going to be given as an open-ended entitlement than in the regime in which we now live. They will be expected to do very good work at a humane pace and seldom to do excellent work at a frenetic pace.

B. Logistics of Starting  Up and Operating

1. The HHEA shall be a bond issuing authority overseen by the Imperial Services Operating Treasury.

2. License Fees shall be payable in advance.

3. In some case the Imperial Waste Authority will pay advanced fees for storage of certain scheduled materials.

4. The HHEA will receive on percent of DIG revenues every year outside the regular budget process of the DIG Legislature. It will invest a third in a Trust and spend the rest in annual operations.

5.The HHEA will receive funds as may be allocated by the DIG.

Really Becoming an Empire: Some Aspects of Transforming America. Part Two

In the first part of this topic, which was the first post in this series within a series of blog posts, I discussed the Five-Fold Nobility. I want to continue  discussing the process of becoming an Imperial American Culture by discussing the laws, customs, institutions and rules of the interregnum.  The system proposed here and the system it is based upon is best served by relatively dull interregni at long intervals. However, in many ways the interegni are the periods of time which most define the regime and its system. In this Time Between the Kings the functions, structures and values of the regime are best illustrated and best made clear.

II. The Interregnum

There will have to be a direct  reference in the new Constitution to the  Interregnum Major Section of the Title The Imperial House in the Direct Imperial Government Civil Code and that Major Section will contain the detailed law which will govern and authorize the appropriate officials to effect the progress of the interregnum.

A. End of Reign Issues

The Grand Royal and Imperial House and Household Assembly will have the capacity to administer a number of regimes of Abdication. Only one of them is considered normal and is not really an abdication when within the number of times it has been invoked it is used properly and things are as they were expected to be. When an older Basileus-King/Roi-Emperor has passed the average life expectancy already and has been suffering from a lingering illness and has certified that he believes this to be his last illness and has set this deed in effect then A Time oF Mortality Abdication Act is in effect. When this Monarch slips into a sharp decline, coma or extended incompetence from which it is not believed he can survive longer than an interregnum takes then the instrument of law is activated and all proceeds as though he had died  except for some issues of form. When he dies during the Pre Conclave Process the Process is then interrupted and all the effects are managed which go with the death itself.  Then, with small adjustments the Process proceeds where it left off.  Except fo this single form of Abdication none are normal. The Emperor is expected to reign until dead. The interregnum begins when this death occurs.

1. Certification of Death or Abdication

All three Court Physicians and the entire Successions Committee shall be summoned. A Quorum of these person will certify the Death or Abdication of the Monarch.

2.Summoning of the Agents of the Bereaved

In the case of Death the Harem is Given A declaration of Instant Dissolution. In the case of Abdication the Harem is given a declaration of Preliminary and Progressive Dissolution. The Harem’s Steering Board and the Mistress of Ceremonies decide whether they dissolve under a system of Emergency and Secrecy in Dissolution or whether ordinary procedures should be followed. The Harem will divide up the Common fund, set in place the defunct harem trust operating board, set up the correspondence committee and still be on premise to distribute three passes to their choice of Heirs before attending the funeral under normal circumstances. In an emergency they and their children and attendants will follow sealed procedures for dispersal.

3. Council of the Bereaved and First Dissolution

If there is an Empress she is now titled Empress Bereaved and holds Imperial Sway as she first meets with the Interregnum Council. If  there is an Acting Empress then she becomes the President of the Interregnum Council which shall have reduced but substantial Imperial Sway during the Interregnum. If there is no Empress at all then the Interregnum Council will work under the Minimum Reserve Powers Provision of the Code and will work with the Direct Imperial Government to hold and exercise the Imperial Sway untill the new Emperor is reigning. Here  in the first meeting the Harem. the List of Heirs, the  Mistress of Ceremonies Bureaucracy and the Personal Offices of the Emperor or admitted to the Council of the Bereaved and given Writs of Dissolution and a schedule of their breaking apart and evacuating various duties and places.

4.The State Funeral and Burial

The State Funeral and Burial or to be major events but are not going to discuss in detail here. The Family must be well-informed and cared for but should have few decisions to make and tasks to innovate as regards this event. In all cases all Heirs and Family are to be given time (at least three days) to attend to activities related to these events with little other demand for their serious attentions.

B. The Interregnum  Imperial Sway

The Interregnum does not greatly reduce the powers or responsibilities of the Imperial Sway. The main reduction is  that it shall be nearly impossible to reform Succession law and procedure at this time of the regime’s operation. the governance and politics of the Imperial House goes on with only such use of recesses and vacations as fit within a sensible established framework.

1. The Empress

If there is an Empress she is politically indistinguishable from the Emperor in all but a few specified areas of law and operation.  The Acting Empress will have substantial power  when acting with full support of the majority of the Interregnum Council.

2. The Interregnum Council

The Interregnum Council must certify all Imperial acts, edicts and proclamations. They must also adjust to the three very different roles they will fulfill depending on the presence and capacity of th Empress.

C. The Successions Regime

On some day between the Death or Abdication and twenty-one days later the Imperial Solicitor and the three Chaplains and the US Censors and the Commanders of Each Compact Cavalry Honor Guard will declare that a Successions Regime is under full procedure. These persons will meet with the Interregnum Council and Publish a report on the basics of the Successions regime. they will also address a joint Session of Congress and hold a major press conference on this subject.

 1. Evaluation, Enrollment and House Passes of Heirs

Heirs by right under thirteen years of age will always have been Heirs- in-Waiting. if one is about to turn thirteen he may appeal for a delay of up to one month and according to the guidelines of the Code the Interregnum Council will make these determination. This will be determined and the List of  Heirs will be submitted. Those unwilling to participate will be publicly interviewed, will sign an affidavit and be fined. They will not ne allowed to pass down their participation or simply pass the chance. The number of Passes held by each Heir will be announced and the number of those awarded on the basis of their evaluation and the score resulting in those evaluation passes will also be published. The disposition of the four passes belonging to the Empress, the one belonging to each Chaplain, the three belonging to the Harem, the two belonging to the Imperial Solicitor, the two belonging to the Commander of the Blood Company and the one belonging to the Commander of the Noble and Aristocratic Honor Guard will also be published.

2.The Assembly of Peer-Electors, Electors-for Life and Marshalls

All Imperial, Acadian and Royal Peer-Electors and Electors for Life will be assembled and  meet the Marshalls selected by the  Interregnum Committee. The five Peer-Electors who are also Heirs will relinquish their role after certifying the Marshalls. They shall do this with the understanding that they will take these up again if and when they are eliminated from the competition. The Heir will have five days from that assembly to submit their listed Team of Supporters.

3. The Assembly of Heir’s Teams

Each Heir shall submit a list of people with a title for which role they would play in the Conclave if admitted. The list will number the highest  total number of people whom that Heir could possibly bring as electors into the Conclave if he used no passes and if he earned therefore all possible bonuses. Thus the list will vary substantially by Heir. Nobody may be a principal on more than one list. Every Heir’s list will include at least three alternates who are not on any other list in any capacity. Nobody may be on more than four lists in any capacity.  At the time of the Conclave no Heir will be permitted to bring in anyone not on their list submitted at this time.

4.The Grand Assembly of  Permanent Electors and Heirs and the Opening Address of the Marshalls

Once the lists are certified the Marshalls of the Trials and Ordeals will announce the Program and certify the Heirs to the Competitors Camp. They shall not leave it until they become Arrived Heirs or are eliminated. The whole body of Permanent Electors will accompany them there for a reception and the Sealing In of the Competitors.

5.The Dissolution of the House and Household and the Start of the Trials and Ordeals.

From the moment they are sealed in the Imperial Household will begin a step by step and stage by stage dissolution of the Imperial House and Household sections and the Roll of the House and Household. The Permanent and Succeeding Sections will begin to be certified with the help of and witness of the people on the Heirs lists.  The Trial and Ordeals will begin and continue on a schedule which is known and with regulated media coverage.

6.The Trials and Ordeals and the Summoning of the Conclave Participants and Alternates

There will be a Halfway Reception on the day when the Heirs are halfway through the Trials and Ordeals. All Conclave Participants and the Heir Competitors will attend. At that time the Participants will be sealed into the  Residence of the Conclave. They will begin to watch events in the Trials and Ordeals from the stands and galleries prepared for them.

7. The Arrival of the Heir-Candidates and the Dismissal of the Marshalls and the Minister of Protocol.

When the Trials and Ordeals or completed there will be a Ceremony of Arrival and the Marshalls and the Outgoing Minister of Protocol will be Dismissed at that ceremony. The Empress will address the assembly briefly if she wishes and if there is an Empress without regard to recent or intervening custom. The Conclave proper will begin on the next day.

D. The Conclave

The Conclave will operate in secret. The minutes will not be published for fifty years. The participants will not be allowed to record anything while in the chamber.   The first day however they will all be entitled to write a letter home and then there will be a ceremonial burning of pens and paper. The secrecy will begin the second day.

1. The Opening Address and Presentations of Heir-Candidates

The first day will end with all Arrived heirs giving a speech to the Conclave. They may be assisted by their electors with equipment and performances. Each shall be allotted the same period of time. The speeches will be brief.

2.The Sealing of the Conclave

The Conclave will be sealed and the Heirs sent to the Waiting Camp. From there they will be summoned as they are eliminated to serve as Electors or else at the end to become Emperor or to witness the Emperor  being proclaimed.

 3. The Ballots

The Imperial Solicitor will address the Conclave reminding them that they may elect by acclamation on the first ballot so long as it is duly certified by ballot. However he will also read the rules which force an election if pursued long enough. An Heir must receive two-thirds of the votes on the first ballot to become Emperor. After the first ballot all those who received less votes than the top half of the Arrived Heirs and did not finish in the top three in any of either the Imperial, Acadian or Royal Louisiana Electoral Delegations will be eliminated.  On the second ballot the rules will be complex and in the code depending on the number of candidates but the top Candidate in each block will still be protected. On the third ballot and afterwards a simple majority is required to determine the Emperor and any Candidate finishing twice at the bottom of a ballot after the third shall be eliminated.

4. Proclamation

The Emperor-Elect will be for all purposes Emperor. However, his role shall be assumed in stages. But the Interregnum ends with his election.

Monarchy and Royalist Culture in America: Past, Present and Future/ Part 2.1

This is  the real release of something you may have seen at an early unfinished state. That makes it only the second post overall and is the second post in recent posts to publish prematurely. If you got an earlier copy I apologize for its limitations. This post is directly related to the last post with the same title except that it is called Part One. However, it is also important to place it in the context of a much larger series of postings in this blog as well as the context of this blog as a whole. Nonetheless, each post that I add to this blog is meant to stand on its own and to be as clear as possible given the rather hurried, not supported and un-footnoted manner in which these blog postings are prepared. In this blog post I want to try to make the face of a new royalist regime imaginable.

I.The circle and milieu of people and institutions just beyond and surrounding the Imperial House and the Emperor in the new regime.

 A. The Peer Electors

Under the proposed system of an American Empire there would be forty Peer-Electors. These would embody and exemplify much of the essence of the new royalist regime and the struggle to make it work in our society. These Peer-Electors would all have Fiefdoms, Forty of Forty-Nine, the Imperial House would have Nine Fiefdoms associated with it. Because I am revealing this at this point it would be far more likely to have people disavow these roles than to try to claim them. But I have reached a point where naming some names and parameters of first choices seems right. Thirty-two will be Familial Peer Electors and eight will be Institutional Peer Electors.

1. The Familial Peer-Electors

a. The Acadians

i. Prince Boulet

ii. Prince Theriot

iii.Prince Broussard

vi.The Count Ochs-Sulzberger, Chief of New York Jewry

vii. The Demi-Prince Kennedy of Hyanis, Chief of the New England Irish

viii. The Duke Astor of the Northwestern Development

ix. The Count Bush of  Kennebunkport

x. Il Duca Fava-Gianini-Hoffman of New York and San Francisco’s Little Italys

xi. Man van Adel Roosevelt, Chief of The New Holland Legacy Community

xii. Earl Lowell of Cape Ann, Chief of the Yankees

c. Academic

i. President of Harvard University

B. The High Council of Nobles

One of the ways that I approached the proposed new regime in an earlier series of posts was to discuss the composition of the Compact Legislatures in the Major Compacts of which there would be thirteen in the new regime. I have also addressed the fact that a small portion of the lands of the United States in the new regime would  be administered as Direct Imperial Government Lands. The Supreme Executive of the Direct Imperial Government would be the Emperor. The Direct Imperial Government would also elect fifteen of its own number as members of The Grand Senatorial Constitutional Assembly and no Constitutional Amendment to the United States Constitution could be ratified unless  it received endorsement of one member of the Direct Imperial Legislature at the start, was passed by a simple majority of one of the three chambers and received a third of the vote in the other two chambers. That would be the rule if the Emperor signed the Amendment but  if he did not sign it then in addition to higher standards elsewhere on would need a simple majority in two chambers and a two-thirds majority in one chamber of the Direct Imperial Government. The Grand Royal and Imperial House and Household Assembly would only function as part of the Direct Imperial Government when Constitutional Amendments or Changes to the Supreme Charter of the Direct Imperial Government were being considered. On all other matters the two chambers of legislation would be the Government Assembly and the High Council of Nobles. All of this paragraph really exists to set up the role and membership of the High Council of Nobles.

The High Council of Nobles would consist of 257  Nobles of the following groups of Seated Nobles:

1. The Forty Peer-Electors

2. Three Ordinary Nobles selected by the Ordinary Nobility Block of each  Compact’s  Council of Nobles  (39 seats)

3.One Noble of the Sword selected by the Nobility of the Sword Block of each Compact’s Council of Nobles (13 seats)

4.One Noble of the Robe  selected by the Nobility of the Robe Block of each Compact’s Council of Nobles (13 seats)

5. On even years One Noble of the Chamber and on Odd years one Noble of the Games from Each Compact chosen by the Executive and Judicial Board of that Compact (13 seats)

6. Fifty Members of the High Imperial Nobility variously seated. Among these there shall be the Ten who are entitled to write a large X after their name and title. These are high nobility always seated by right. It is from these that Peer Electors of the Familial type will be replaced should a line die out. Three will be Les Condes Haute Chefs des Acadiens and the others will be of other ethnicities.

7. Fifty Members of the Middle Imperial Nobility variously seated.

8. Twenty-five members of the Lower Imperial Nobility variously seated.

9. Twelve High Knights of Created and Reformed Orders seven inner and five outer orders  which have something to do with Chivalry but whose members will not be Knights but whose leader shall Knight and Baron-for-Life at the Imperial Court. These shall require reform of the charters of these orders to some degree but as little as can create the needed effect. The Knights will be:

A. Inner Orders

i. Supreme Knight of the Heirs of the Cincinnati

ii. Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus

iii. Supreme Knight of  Knights Templar of American Free-Masonry

iv. Supreme Knight of Living Medal of Honor Recipients

v. Supreme Knight of American Astronauts

vi. Supreme Knight of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan

vii. Haute Chevalier des Ridelles des Acadiens

B. Outer Orders

i. Supreme Knight of the Honorary US Citizens and their Heirs.

ii. Supreme Knight of  Fellowship of Americans with Foreign Honors of Knightly or Higher rank.

iii. Supreme Knight of the USMA Alumni Association

iv. Supreme Knight of the USNA Alumni Association

v. Supreme Knight of the USAFA Alumni Association

C. The Imperial Services

This paragraph  or subsection disappeared in some versions of this post and has been repaired from a corrupted version. So if you actually discuss it with someone that could lead to some confusion. I appear to be in an auto-destruct sequence on the quality control of these posts. The Lower Chamber of the Direct Imperial Government Assembly  would be made up of three thirds as to seating. One third would be rotated in from a Roll of Direct Imperial Lands Communities and Organizations  without direct election to the chamber. Another third would be elected from constituent smaller governments within the Direct Imperial Government. The third portion would be made up of both elected and ex officio  representative members of the Imperial Services who are not qualifed to be part of the Grand Royal and Imperial House and Household Review.  The Imperial Services would be as follows:

1.Emperor’s Direct Services

a. Military

i. The Blood Company

ii. The Noble and Aristocratic Honors Guard

iii. Le Orde Sacre et Imperial des Loups garous

iv. The Maintenance Corps

b. Civilian

i. The Imperial Solicitor General

ii. The Imperial Goodwill Corps

2. The Empress’s Services

a. Military

i. The Empress’s Guard

ii. The Amazon Guard

b. Civilian

i. Ministry of Protocol

ii. Bureau of Women’s Affairs

iii. Ministry of Three Title Unity

3. Mistress of Cermonies Services

i. Haute Ecole des Traiteurs

ii. Office of Ritual Confrontation

iii. Office of Placements, Liaisons and Alliances

iv. The Palace Police

v. Harem Council

4. Imperial House Assembly Services

i. Imperial Chaplaincy

* Office of the Sacristy

**Office of the Almoner General

***Full and Extended Tribunals

****Missions and Outreaches

ii. Imperial Domestic Service

iii. House and Household Debt Office

iv. Bank of the Imperial House

v. Ministry of Human Habitat Expansion

All of these services would provide some engagement with the larger society. However, they also form a culture and society within the House and we will revisit that aspect without as much outlining in the next post.

II.  The Emperor, Empress, Imperial House and Imperial Household

A. The Status and Nature of the Emperor

At no time during my memory has there been anything that amounts to a  widespread popular demand for an Emperor in the United States. Although in Part One of this post I listed royalist elements of the culture which may be said to have expressed a sort of pent-up demand for a royalizing revolution that is different from suggesting that there has been a popular demand in any focused political sense. But it is possible to discuss what such a figure would be like .

The Federal American Empire of the United States will send Fifty-One Electors from the States, Fourteen Electors from the Territories, Seventeen Electors from the Possessions and Thirteen from the Compacts as well as Forty Peer-Electors and a random selection of 72 Citizen Subjects to the Conclave  and Electing Delegate from Each of the Three Chambers of the Direct Imperial Government Legislature to Elect the Emperor. These 210 voters will be joined by 210 voters from whatever may constitute the Kingdom of Louisiana. But 840 Electors in the Conclave will come from the Ethnos Arkadios alone. however all three interests and titles must be united in one man. So whom will they choose? Their will also be a few Heir’s Electors.

The Heirs consist of the Top Twenty in the Ordinary Line of Succession plus as many as six and no fewer than five more. Thus there are at any time Twenty-Five or Twenty-Six Heirs. The five outside the Ordinary Line are Peer-Electors themselves. They are Prince Boulet, Prince Theriot, Prince Broussard, Prince Mouton and Prince Leblanc. The one that may not exist is an eldest son sired by the Emperor and born to his Mistress of Ceremonies who is over thirteen years of age. However, the Conclave is not likely to be confronted with 26 Arrived Heirs Candidate and indeed cannot be although the exact number is not determined. There will be a series of Thirteen Trials and Ordeals – ten Trials and three Ordeals — before the election. Anyone failing a Trial or Ordeal must use an Heir’s Pass or be eliminated. All Heirs can gain up to three passes based on their total fitness and preparation prior to the  Trials, Ordeals and Conclave Process in the Heir’s Evaluation. Fifteen more passes will be in the gift of key members of the former Emperor’s Court and House. Unlike other royalty  under other systems, all Heirs shall be equal as regards the Trials and Ordeals and these Passes.  However, the Cinque Princes des Grand Familles shall have two more passes of their own right and the Son of the Mistress of Ceremonies shall have two as well. The Lower Ten of the Ordinary Twenty will have no passes of their own right. The Upper Ten will each have three for being in the upper ten and then the inverse of their number. In other words the First Heir shall have ten and three passes of his own right and the Tenth Heir will have one and three passes of his own right. For every pass that survives the completion of the Trials and Ordeals the Heir shall bring two  Heir’s Electors to the Conclave. The Heir shall receive five bonus  Heir’s Electors if he survives with more than five passes and ten bonus Heir’s Electors additional to the above if he survives with more than ten passes.

It is from these Arrived Heirs that the Conclave shall elect the Emperor. The Line of Succession will be discussed elsewhere. In five Trials half the Heirs will be required to use a Pass or be eliminated. In two all but one will have to use a pass or be eliminated. In three all but  the top two will be required to use a pass or be eliminated.  The Ordeals must simply be completed and those failing to do so will use a pass or be eliminated. So the exact number of arrivals will vary.    The Procedure of the Conclave would have to be discussed elsewhere in a Code of its own. However, an Emperor must be elected by at least a majority of votes and for the first ballot more is required. One or more Heirs are eliminated  by finishing at the bottom of each ballot and then become Electors themselves. The final result is create a structure in which a majority must emerge.

To be an Heir Candidate and participate in the Merits portion of the  process one be thirteen years and a day old and a male. If over fifty-one must have been legitimately married in a marriage suitable for an Emperor and Empress regardless of its current state. If one is not the Son of the Mistress of ceremonies one must be a Baptized Roman Catholic or lose four passes and be a Baptized Greek Orthodox.  If one is the Son of the Mistress of Ceremonies and not Baptized into one of these Churches one must agree to be baptized if Elected Emperor before taking office. Should the entire system be formally disavowed by both the above mentioned Christian communions the House must seek out one of the Ancient Christian Communions as a House in Exile and members should adhere to it as described above.

The Emperor has one valid sacramental marriage at a time and recognizes the uniqueness of this marriage however he is also in structured legal relationships of polygamous nature which are not secret. A unique consort is th Mistress of Ceremonies and then there is a Harem. All his consorts are members of the Grand Royal and Imperial House and Household Assembly and of the Imperial House.  All of his children by these consorts will be born to a rank of no less than Knight for life. The legal status of these children under the Direct Imperial Civil Code will be  “Natural”. However, the children born to the Mistress of Ceremonies would be “Ceremonial” a status between “Legitimate” and “Natural” which would be available only to the Emperor and unique to these children.

B. The  Statue and Nature of the Empress

The Empress will first be the legitimately married First or High Wife of the Basileus Arkadios  and secondly the duly recognized Basilissa Arkadias and then shall be Anointed to any role and Title as Queen of Louisiana as well as to the Title of Empress of the Federal American Empire of the United States. Her Coronation as Empress shall coincide with her husband’s unless she marries him after he is Emperor.  The post and Title of Empress filled and unfilled as according to law, situation and reality.  When there is no Empress it will be because there is no Basilissa Arkadias or Queen of the Arcadians. She is always a Consort and there cannot be an Empress or Queen Regnant in this system.  However, while this position and status is fulfilled then she is Head of State and Imperial Sway Plenipotentiary during Terms of Incapacity and in any Interregnum Occasioned by the Death of an Emperor. However, while there is never an Acting Emperor or reduced  role for some kind of substitute there can be an Acting Empress so long as there is no Full Legitimate Consort to the Emperor who is sharing an active Domestic Regime with the Emperor. Those eligible to be Acting Empress or  the Emperor’s Mother and his sisters in any full legitimate marriage and by putative blood as well as his daughter’s by an Empress or one who would have been putative Empress had she not died or become divorced from him.  When there is no Empress two-thirds of the funds and revenues collected in her name will go into a Empress’s Trust   and the Empress’s Reserve of Precious Metal coinage which shall add to the funds available to a full Constitutional Empress. The rest will be spent by the Empress’s Bureaucracy under the guidance of a special council designated to operate when there is no Empress. When there is an Acting Empress she shall preside over the special council  and half the funds collected in the name of the Empress will go into her bureaucracy and half will go into the Trust and Reserve as funds which shall be available to the next Constitutional Empress.

Any woman married to the Emperor as his fully Legitimate and First, High or Sole Wife at any time during his life shall be assured the rank of Countess for herself Honorable “Baron at Court” for any Consort with whom she is married and the hereditary Knighthood for any children she may have whatever, She shall also retain such ranks as she had prior to marrying the man who is Emperor. She shall be subject to many restrictions of the Honor Code and required to pay homage to the Emperor annually for as long as she lives in any part of the Empire. She is eligible for a Fiefdom from the Intimates Alottment if she remains unmarried and discreet after an amicable divorce. She is eligible for an Estate of Bounty otherwise.

There will be a third part to this posting unless i am prevented from finishing it. The outline of that post leaked into the first post of Part Two I put up. It is not lost. I simply cannot develope it here.

Developing Projects and Policies: The Fine Art of the Now

I like to think of this blog with all its posts as a single grander project which joins together all of it components. Each page post and theme contributes to the totality of the blog in a way which enhances its own significance rather than diminishing it. Sometimes the themes may seem very remote from one another to some people but almost always they are themes which recur quite frequently in my life and writing. This post is pretty complicated in itself. It will combine elements of my interest in Christianity, film, space colonization and  writing. It is a fairly challenging post to read I think  — but I am not about trying to write for the lowest common denominator of talent exercising their minds at the lowest level of effort. That is why I write for ye few, ye proud, ye brave, ye readers.
I have been writing and drawing about colonizing craters on the Moon for quite a while. However, now we know that a specific crater on the pools has relatively abundant water and likely neighbors others with water. That means that water and crater like qualities currently coexist. We must now take this combination very seriously in contemplating our next steps in the space colonization enterprise. So I propose we develop robots to cap these wet craters early on and follow up with a short Apollo like visit to install key components and then launch a settlement ship. This small ship’s crew would see themselves as laying the foundations of a permanent human presence on the Moon as well as developing and pursuing their own short-term objectives. Here is small set of crude drawings of the LACRIMA (Lunar Advance Capping Robot Instigating Measurable Atmosphere).

LACRIMA - Lunar Advance Capping Robot Instigating Measurable Atmosphere

The second illustration is of the LACRIMA deployed as it varied stages and components have deployed to undertake various tasks. The drawing depicts operations before the first human short duration landing.

LACRIMA operating as a sort of terrarium developer.

The first human flight would bring an engine and cables for heating and power and would also have a Moon buggy to be left there. This would  be used to connect to solar array robotically deposited in advance outside the polar areas. The mission of the advance human team would be to connect this set of solar arrays to the crater as well as to install the engine, improve the cap and install a good port and elevator in the cap.  The second crew would bring advanced habitation components for the crater. A group would stay a short time and another group would stay on long-term.
There is a constant dialectic of changing steps and retaining long-term objectives in any great project. I am a Christian and I find in both the life Jesus lived among us and in the memory of his life plenty of inspiration  for development and courage as regards worthy objectives.  Here is a Facebook Note I wrote dealing with some of the thoughts I have about the life of Christ.

I write a lot. I have written a lot. I read a lot. I have read a lot.I have often read aloud in public. I have taught people to read. I have taught people to write. Perhaps I can fill this note with these short declarative first person sentences on this theme. On the other hand, I may go ahead and try to do more. I have not been a very successfull writer compared to the tiny number of people who make huge fortunes from their writing. I have not even been financially successfull compared to the ten thousand or so people in the world who really earn most of their living from writing and live pretty well. I doubt that there are a lot more than that. Notice how much of you local paper comes with a local by-line. Then take that as a generous and very inflated glimpse of how many real writers jobs there are.

In this note I am going to do something that even I think is a bit odd and irregular. That I think is even a bit out-of-place for this type of note. I am going to use as one of my flow-in-flow-out points of reference a hypothetical writing task involving real, living and controversial people. I have in several notes recently revealed a long time secret esoteric interpretation of the New Testament. Now, just suppose it were to be commercially published outside of this little blog in the world of free access with only 499 possible subscribers as I type these words. What would be among the highest and best and most appealing uses for me? Where might it be best released?

Probably if Mel Gibson bought partial rights to the notes here as part of a prequel to Passion of the Christ called Life of the Christ that would be close to the best. Really my preferences would be that specific. Why?

Because he can make a good movie and movies reach lots of people who are hard to reach.
Because he cast real ethnic Jews in many roles and they look right.
Because he used original languages, imperfectly but better than almost anyone else.
Because both he and I might make some money and I could use it.
Because he seemed to interface effectively with a large section of the Christian community.
Because even though he filmed in Malta he got a better feel of the period at least than most.

I often watch media presentations about Jesus that are just plain horrible in my honest opinion. Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth and the Passion by Gibson stand out as among the best I have seen. Screenwriting is highly collaborative. I have done a good bit of work in newspapers and it is pretty collaborative too but not nearly as much as screenwriting. But all writing is related to a larger world than the page. I think that such a set of relations is often not given enough respect as being very hard to trace and analyze. On the other hand some quite literate critics and some illiterate dismissers also treat the nature of literature’s relationship to the real world as being hard to establish. They simply argue that it has no real significance.

There is no substitute for practice in writing. Jesus reading in the synagogue then preaching. teaching fro long periods of time at a relatively regular feeding of multitudes and training his Apostles and high ranking disciples. In that rhythm were produced stories and words that still compel many of us like no other words. Shakespeare, writing for a play editing when it did not work and then eventually producing one worth copying down and putting in the company chest. Such works have endured. Faulkner earned more money over almost the whole course of his life from screenwriting in Hollywood than from writing novels in Mississippi. Hemingway cranked out war reportage and did many stories in the first person about fishing and traveling. From that routine of work the literary Hemingway emerged. Enduring literature is born from the grind of human interaction, nature and writing more often than not. Writers write. they keep writing and they keep improving in a struggle to realize their dreams on paper and express their real life insights in their dreams.

Northrup Frye, a distinguished literary critic wrote a book about the influence of the Bible on literature and called it “The Great Code”. I was influenced by that book and enjoyed a great deal but its name has no overt connection to the esoteric interpretation of coded frames in the Bible which I have been writing about lately. rather he makes the important point of how scripture is a vital core and framework of understanding for subsequent literature especially English literature.

There is a great deal of the Gospel account which is best understood by the fact that Jesus was a literate story-teller and orator who by distributing wealth on a fairly large-scale while being interesting attracted a significant number of writers to his movement. Probably there were as many as hundred pamphlet like texts about him produced by those who knew him. St. John’s Gospel ends as follows:
“Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, “Master, who is the one who will betray you?” When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?’ Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain untill I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me.” So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just “What if I want him to remain until I come? (What concern is it of yours?)” ”
“It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. There are so many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the world could contain books that would be written.” John 21: 20-25

In this passage the we who believe and are writing the gospel we have seem to suggest pretty clearly that they have known St. John who knew Jesus and have received an oral tradition from him. They suggest that John also wrote a book which is the basis of the current Gospel of John which they have edited. Finally they make very much the noises that one might make when there are many documents one did not get to include in a history and so one apologizes to the authors of those texts and tries to find an excuse for not included the tidbits and themes that one may have taken great trouble to make available. I am not sure that Mel Gibson could get a real clear feel for that across to his audience but he might do better than some have done. There is a chance that even I would feel the richness of the work outweighed its flaws.

John was an episcopos and an Apostle within the Church but though he is not named with Judas (definitely not Iscariot), Joseph, Simon and James as one of Jesus’s brothers by the people of Nazareth he was also a relative of Jesus and one of Jesus’s purposes in telling Mary that John was her son and she is his mother is to designate John as heir of such privileges within the house of David as he has it in his power to give. This is limited compared to some systems but John is now the man of the house in which his mother is matron which is temporal and not the nascent Christian church. I am aware that the public Christian church has never had a tradition that the holy family adopted anyone but in our esoteric tradition Judas and Simon were cousins whose mother was a descendant of the Maccabees and a fairly prominent one. Their father was a Zealot and a devoted one despite being a Davidian of prominence. He was crucified and while the family was in Egypt and then when they returned the mother and children came to live in a small house that Joseph built on the edge of his struggling compound. She died before Jesus reached adulthood. They were adopted but in a rather more loose and House of David way than other Jews would have used. It was through them that Jesus acquired his first ties ti the Maccabean element in Israel. James and Joseph the other brothers of Jesus were not blood brothers of Simon and Judas. While Catholic prayers seem to emphasize Joseph as not having had sexual relations with anyone it is our esoteric tradition that Joseph was Joseph’s son by levirate marriage to another relative who had lost a husband while they were in Egypt. She raised him as the dead man’s son until her own death and then without parent or siblings he was also adopted. Note that when the people of Nazareth mention his family they are ready to stone Jesus. He had tow near relatives who had met violent deaths and in the ancient world people frankly found it easier to kill people in that class. Modern people do as well but they are not as open about it. Jesus’s family business and household were substantial and although there were many dependents Jesus’s designated heir had more leisure to write books than some living in the relative communism of the early church. To modern ears this sound s hypocritical. But there would have been no church movement without the funds drawn from Jesus’s household at various times and in various ways.

The Gospels also make it as clear as they can that the Herodian dynasty regarded Jesus’s family as a very major threat. They remained more or less continuously at war with them. Herod the Great orders the killing of Bethlehem’s little boys to get Jesus. Herod Antipas is only a quarter-king but as Tetrarch he kills John Jesus’s cousin who is known as the Baptist. When he first hears of the ministry of Jesus he mentions killing John right away and then asks to meet Jesus. Everyone knew Jesus had a better claim dynastically to any Jewish throne anywhere than any Herodian did.

Jesus’s household was clearly not rich. Zealot assaults on cashiered mercenaries at the time of the death of the Holy Innocents in Bethlehem involved members of the House of David and Herodians were killed to in part as revenge for Herod’s atrocity in the most ancient seat of the House of David. This sort of conflict was not only unequal, easily terrifying and cruel it was very expensive for the Davidians. Though he generated a lot of wealth as an adult they were poor when he was born and always had many expensive burdens to bear. Nonetheless, John could afford to write.

Jesus grew up with double entendres and stealth as part of his extended family lore and his way of life. Jesus’s only land based attack is not mentioned in the Bible at all and is perhaps the most gruesome and shocking to modern sensibilities. Jesus recovered from his fasting and prayer, meeting with the Essene emissaries, leading the demon assassins into the lion’s den and he immediately met with Simon the Zealot, a group of unmentioned zealots and relatives and relates his tale of the Devil’s camp. There are pens of captives, huge supplies, torture chambers, guards and time is of the essence. He gets a handful of people to accompany him only one of whom will become an Apostle. He agrees to position them around the camp at night with an emphasis on opening the cages of the captives and setting them on horses and asses kept there with supplies and scattering to the winds. Then they are to take the loot they can killing such guards as they can and bring the loot to a place agreed upon. With about a dozen or so men he assigns all but one to this task.

The only assistant he takes with him is led to a prearranged spot with cages of birds dragging tiny bundles of fire starter on string and a couple of donkeys. The assistant set the fires and released the bird and as they flew over the camp the fire reached the strings and they were burnt through creating tiny bombs. All of this took place at night and so it had a stunning visual effect. The birds were then freed as well by the fire and disappeared. This was timed to occur when the first guard sounded an alarm in the main camp. The men in the larger group would attack at that time. Then the assistant would sling stones dipped in poison at those guards moving near his position. Jesus would be the only many leading an assault on the main cam. The only human assaulting it. Using asses dragging meat and a relationship with the now man-eating lions he led a pride of recently man-eating lions into the camp. The camp had literally a thousand armed men. The other smaller camp was unusually filled with camels and donkeys and packs of booty and unusually lightly guarded had many things not been very unusual the raid on the adjoining camp would have failed but as it happened the camp lost all its prisoners many trade animals and lots of supplies and wealth. A few prisoners were armed by the raiders and died fighting but only one raider died and not on site. When the guards from the main camp arrived they found burning tents dead bodies and little else.

Jesus held back in shadows with a sling and a bag of stones. Whenever a guard drew a bow or a spear effectively against a lion he hit the guard with a stone not caring much if he killed, wounded or stunned. He simply supported the lions letting the blood and food smells of the camp drive them into a frenzy. When groups assembled to attack or defend against a lion he picked a few targets and hit them. He kept this up for a very long time. Then with fires in both camps and the howls of men and the roars of lions he slipped away to meet his men. He never returned to the camp again. He never got a full report on the damage. But when he did return to the meeting place he had enough supplies to begin his public program. The skirmish itself is now lost to all history but there were laid the economic foundations of the Jesus movement.

Jesus then gave the real life speech on which the parable of the talents would be based (see Matthew 25: 14-30). Keeping a double share of the loot himself he divided the rest equally among his followers. Reminding them that he also expected there support within the coming campaign. Further any loot they could not take at that time he agreed to take on an opposite understanding — He would give them back a portion of the value he could realize from the loot upon demand after a reasonable delay. How much was this fortune? It was a significant loss to the fabulously rich demons but it was almost an immeasurable fortune to the struggling House of David. Through his interview with the Devil Jesus knew that the Devil saw three primary men to be eliminated in order to destroy Galilee. One was himself. The other was the most successful fisherman on the Lake — Peter. The last was Jesus’s mortal and hereditary enemy Tetrarch Herod Antipas. Jesus used the fortune in several ways, first he ordered several large loads of wood and supplies through his Household’s carpentry shop and then fabricated the platforms he had already envisioned for dealing with the swine. He used a silent partner to fund his distant cousins James and John to pay off their own debts and then to buy a share of Peter’s business. Thus unknown to any becoming their partner. He paid to have many amphora of fine wine switched with the ablutions water at the wedding of friends having hard times, all of this was wine seized in the raid.

While waiting for the wood to arrive he converted the now empty bird cages to fish cages with hidden compartments and hid a different currency of coin in each of the cages. These coins also helped to anchor the cages by weighing them down. However, there were animals, saddles, weapons and clothes he could not safely use or sell. Through Simon the Zealot he found that Chuza was in trouble with his Lord Herod Antipas for both using court funds to support Zealots and skimming some off for himself. Jesus met with Chuza and Simon and came up with a system where Jesus would send loot to Chuza who had the only institution in Galilee large enough to launder the goods. Jesus would take a fraction of the real value of the loot and allow Chuza to make a cut so long as both the debt incurred by the Zealots and his enemy’s own treasury were also enriched. All three in this set, Joanna, Chuza and Simon would sign off on each transaction. Joanna would bring Jesus and his disciples payment disguised as gifts and then encourage others of women of means to give to his ministry as well(see Luke 8:1-3). This real life experience was the basis of the parable of the wily steward(see Luke 16: 1-15).

Jesus then contracted with foreign merchants so that trade with Galilee would not fail. He ordered lumber, millstones and anything related to bread-making and wineskins. He also bought up most local production of these same items. He traded a brand new millstone in Galilee for anyone who would give him a used stone and a ruined or cracked stone. He traded a new wineskin filled with fine wines from his booty for anyone who would give him two badly used wineskins with any wine in any quantity enough to slosh audibly. He also contracted to build the ovens he would use. He was nearly broke except for a half dozen platforms, a collection of millstones, old wineskins of bad quality, a set of secret ovens and some very part-time help he could demand. With these resources and a handful of new disciples who barely knew him he prepared to face down one of the world’s greatest foes.

The basic schematic of the raids is laid out in my note titled “Easter & War”. As the calming of the storm would indicate, Jesus and his Apostles would cross the seas in a life threatening storm and only then. They would free the captive and drive the swine into the water they would slaughter and butcher the swine bringing only the fish shaped meat pieces to land. Jesus and Peter were seen on one of these platforms in the walking on water. The porkfish were baked on skeletons both of leftover feedings and form the piles of unusable fish fishermen left around. These piles on the shore are mentioned in Jesus’ parable of the net. Jesus always asked people to pass up food to be shared out at his meetings. The normal thing was that a good amount of food was passed up and mixed with the available supply of porkfish. The feedings mentioned in the gospel are manifestations or signs ( and therefore also risky) because the manufactured famine had reached such a point that the people in the crowd had only tiny amounts of food to contribute to the feeding.

Jesus used rituals, parables, acts of charity, instructions and acts of war all overlayed in the same framework of facts. While this gets even more complicated as it passes through layers of writers it was immensely complicated as he lived it. Yet on the other hand this redundant meaning approach made things simple, increased security and aided in his moral teaching ministry. while the phrase “pearls before swine” for example had a history it was used because the bones of the swine tangled in old nets and strings and sunk under water were like white underwater pearls. Some acts of his war are told in parables outside the ordinary form and also repeat technical instructions. Jesus wants his Apostles to find spiritual meaning in the work they do which is largely illegal by most standards. The teaching on scandal is the best example of this style of work.

Imagine the platforms on which Jesus and Peter walked on water as large wooden squares of planks mounted on a heavy timbered cross. The central section over the centermatched cross beams is not platformed. There a ring of pig bladders and skins are inflated and secured under the edge of the platform. A similar rim of inflatables is on the edge of the platform. An odd tube of old nets, sackcloth and trash is weighted down from its open mouth to the lake floor with a small rock. Int hat tube all intestines, pigs trotters, skins, heads and notable pig organs are thrown. Once the butchering is done a millstone is secured around the neck of the tube which is then tied. This is then thrown in and drag the tube down compressing the pig wastes. Later the platform is moved and the place will be the site of several great catches. All of this is done mostly so that Jewish children can eat porkfish and not starve to death while also avoiding scandal.

With that factual scenario in mind listen to the following quote from Matthew 18: 6-9,
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believes in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause sin! Such things must come but woe to the one through whom they come! If your hand or foot causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled than with two hands or two feet be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into fiery Gehenna.” An honest and thoughtful reading will show many parallels unlikely to be coincidental.

Not every aspect of Jesus’s life is documented in some close code on the one hand or retelling in recorded parable on the other. For example the Gospels mention that he sent the sick to be examined by priests, that the manufactured mud pastes for eyes, that he encouraged people to give clothes to the poor and that he was involved with both baptism and healing baths. But there is no real evidence for what I propose as a normal Historical Jesus meeting per se. All lepers and sick people would be gathered first. A divider would go from the shore and into the the lake, dividing men and women bathers. All donated clothes gathered by his traveling followers from others would be given to those with the worst clothes. Those worst clothes would be burnt in the fire pits which heated the ovens elsewhere where the porkfish was made. A very unique and kind of crude but sophisticated soap would be given to the bathers. All those who were free of visual uncleanness after bathing and getting new clothes would be released into the crowd and told to confirm their healings with the authorities. Those still not well would receive what salves and bandages were available and be sated separately near Jesus. He would speak for a while and call for gifts of food to be offered to the front. His Apostles and others would mix these foods with porkfish and other goods they had and redistribute the greatly increased food supply to all after Jesus blessed it. Then Jesus would speak again after all had eaten and listened he would bless those in the section of seating for the sick and many would get well ( though obviously here Christians and atheists must see my scenario differently). Then he would encourage people to go to a section in the middle of the crowd to exchange any gifts that they might have brought with those in need. While this was going on he would allow questions from the crowd. After all of that he would usually dine with a prominent local resident for supper. This would be an all day affair requiring the work of dozens of people. He may have had between 12 and 30 of these days.

Jesus and his disciples hit each of a number of camps twice in raids and had a secondary feeding in most cases by moving small pigs to a wild site where they could forage and slaughtering them later. On each raid they freed all captives not killed in the fighting and used captives they armed with captured weapons though more captives were not fighters. The huge herds of swine also were deliberately chosen because as omnivores that helped create the famine by eating any human food available and not just grass. The demons also had a science of using the swine to foul as much drinking and fishing water as possible.Jesus and his disciples all veiled their faces during these raids.

These raids and feedings created the framework around which the rest of his public ministry coalesced. However, as Herod Antipas killed John the Baptist and began to track Jesus it became harder for Joanna to bring her payments. Pilate desecrated the great Temple in Jerusalem killing Galileans during worship and the Temple guard who had killed many armed foreigners did not dare risk an open battle. Then he was spotted walking on water. It is in this crushingly intense historic period of his life ( and not at some later date) that two things begin to happen. Jesus begins to state repeatedly that he will be crucified in Jerusalem and he increasingly supports and defends his reputation as a Messiah and a the Son of God. Son of God is a term rarely used for human kings in the Old Testament when they have a special mission from God but Jesus begins to push even this most lofty of claims to a higher place. He often spends all night alone in prayer. It is here that the Christ emerges whom atheists find it difficult to admire. However, the literary beauty of his teaching reflecting on all his life is still very sharp and sweet. As a verbal artist he is admirable to any one.

I chose the Mel Gibson prequel device partly because I do not wish to deal with the last week in this note. Gibson’s prequel should go to the Last Supper but I will leave off here. What I have to say about the unknown life of Jesus is largely said in covering these earlier months and years. The Gospels are a rich trove of insights even if not always understood as I see them. However, I hope that as long as we have biographies of Christ in various media there will be some I think are artistically worthy of the subject. I also hope that we will always have such biographies.

Water on the Moon: A Frank Summary of Implications

I. LCROSS has reported: “There is water in Cabeus.”  This is a long way from reading these word on a statue of Anthony Colaprete on the campus of Cabeus High School on the Moon but it is important. The picture below is of me on one of my family’s farms when I was a child but modified to seem the interior of one of my imagined lunar or Martian crater colonies. The wetlands, ponds and gardens at the bottom of the crater are analagous to the Pacific Ocean on Earth it is to be remembered. They are the great concentrations of the water.

The way this environment could be effected is diagrammed below. However, since wet craters exist on the Moon’ polar regions the plans would need to be modified in the first colony. Thus the major solar arrays would either be orbital or (preferably) miles away and connected to the colony by buried cables. Later colonies in the regions of more light  would use a design closer to this one.

How a crater on the Moon or Mars might be developed.

Here is a crude  and brief key to the diagram.

1. The ring at the top is a cap which covers the crater rim.
2.The yellowish gold lines running out from it are rail lines joining the colony to spaceports, colonies and other assets — no spacecraft are allowed near the colony.
3. The red straight lines are the rails on top of the cap built of very strong and light materials.
4.The blue disks are solar array which in the case of a polar colony would have to be remote.
5.The orange-gold disks on the land near bu or observational astronomy, science and communications assets.
6.The green square with the x in the middle is a green pyramidal building housing the only airlock connecting the colony to the surface.
7.The heavy dark green line and the heavy dark red line are buildings which as columns support the cap from the middle and have elevators connecting the floor to the cap and in the case of the green building to th rest of the universe.
8. The irregular green and blue areas at the bottom are the farming, fishing, park and hydrology features.
9.The series of lines in grays and blues and tube-like shapes fanning out near the bottom are the mines which would be the economic base of the  colonies in most cases.
10. In a mature colony many homes would be in the mines and the better ones would  carefully built into the rims of the craters. The floor space of the crater would only be for viewing, agriculture, recreation and truly urgent assignment for other uses. The mental health and prosperity of these colonies would depend upon such a rule.

II. Having seen what could be does not mean that it will be. We will probably never do these things — but our only hope for a good future involves doing these things.

III. I hope ye few, ye brave, ye readers will consider getting involved in this process.
