Weariness

Perhaps one day I will write a real essay on weariness in a blog post. This is not that post. I am just weary.

It is a foggy day in south Louisiana and I am weary. I had a headache for a long time yesterday and I am weary. I heard som bad news from several people and I am weary. I have had a few minor health problems in the last few weeks and I am weary. I see a lot of things getting worse in a world that is already amazingly bad in my view — and I am weary.

In addition, I am a fairly romantic man for the twenty-first century West, combined with being a man fairly polygamous in both ideas and experiences (without ever having been married to two women) for the time and place in which I live and I am a fairly nostalgic man. While my life, sexual ideology and relationships have very little in common with that which shows from the outside in the life of either Julio Iglesias or Willie Nelson there are resonances in the song’s lyrics especially that come to a focus on days when I am weary. If I could sing well I would sing it with different nuances and shades than either of their interpretations. I say that although I respect and enjoy both of them as artists and their music is something I like well. Here, probably illegally, are the lyrics to their song in my heart and head today. If you are reading this and you happen to be one of the women I would be singing this to if I could sing then be sure that Nobody blurs into a composite in my mind — I miss each person with a separate, unique and unequal pain. Here it is:

To all the girls I’ve loved before
Who travelled in and out my door
I’m glad they came along
I dedicate this song
To all the girls I’ve loved before

To all the girls I once caressed
And may I say I’ve held the best
For helping me to grow
I owe a lot I know
To all the girls I’ve loved before

The winds of change are always blowing
And every time I try to stay
The winds of change continue blowing
And they just carry me away

To all the girls who shared my life
Who now are someone else’s wives
I’m glad they came along
I dedicate this song
To all the girls I’ve loved before

To all the girls who cared for me
Who filled my nights with ecstasy
They live within my heart
I’ll always be a part
Of all the girls I’ve loved before

The winds of change are always blowing
And every time I try to stay
The winds of change continue blowing
And they just carry me away

To all the girls we’ve loved before
Who travelled in and out our doors
We’re glad they came along
We dedicate this song
To all the girls we’ve loved before

To all the girls we’ve loved before
Who travelled in and out our doors
We’re glad they came along
We dedicate this song
To all the girls we’ve loved before
